Welford National Park
Welford is a national park in Central West Queensland, Australia, 991 km west of Brisbane. It is located 30km to the South-east of Jundah. The park was established in 1994 to protect the biodiversity of the Mulga Lands, Mitchell Grass Downs and Channel Country bioregions. The southern border is marked by the Barcoo River. The name of the park comes from the original owner of the grazing station, Richard Welford, which was eventually called Welford Downs after his death. Welford himself had named the station Walton. The rare yellow-footed rock-wallaby is found in the park as are aboriginal stone arrangements and water wells. Welford Homestead is heritage-listed homestead built in the early 1880s. Camping with a permit is allowed at one site along the Barcoo River. Recreational activities are centered on the permanent waterholes along the Barcoo where visitors can enjoy fishing, canoeing and kayaking. Jundah, Queensland
Jundah is a rural town and locality in the Shire of Barcoo, Queensland, Australia. Jundah is the administrative centre of the Barcoo Shire local government area. In the , the locality of Jundah had a population of 106 people. Geography The town is located on the Thomson River in Central West Queensland, west of the state capital, Brisbane. History Kuungkari (also known as Kungkari and Koonkerri) is a language of Western Queensland. The Kuungkari language region includes the landscape within the local government boundaries of Longreach Shire Council and Blackall-Tambo Shire Council. The outback town was established in 1883 and given a name meaning "woman" in a local Aboriginal language. Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby
The yellow-footed rock-wallaby (''Petrogale xanthopus''), formerly known as the ring-tailed rock-wallaby, is a member of the macropod family (the marsupial family that includes the kangaroos, wallabies, tree-kangaroos, and wallaroos). Description The yellow-footed rock-wallaby is grey to fawn-grey above and light-coloured below with a black mid-dorsal stripe from the crown of the head to the centre of the back. There is a distinct white cheek stripe, with ears ranging in colour from orange to grey-brown. The forearms and hind legs are bright yellow to rich orange to a light orange-brown. The tail is orange-brown irregularly ringed with dark brown and golden-brown, with the colour of the tip variable from dark brown to white. Idalia National Park
Idalia is a national park in South West Queensland, Australia, 893 km west of Brisbane. Idalia National Park is located near the town of Blackall in the Queensland outback. The park protects 144,000 hectares of mulga lands with conservation value. Idalia National Park was opened in 1990 by Prince Philip. The national park is home to many distinctly Australian species of flora and fauna, including wallaroos, red and grey kangaroos, swamp wallabies, black-striped wallabies, yellow-footed rock-wallabies and endangered bridled nailtail wallabies. Contained within the park are a number of Aboriginal heritage sites, including artefact scatters, stone arrangements and camp sites. Lochern National Park
Lochern is a national park in Longreach, Central West Queensland, Australia, 1,047 km west of Brisbane. Eastern parts of the national park are interspersed with numerous channels of the Thomson River. The park is sprawled over an area of 24,300 hectares. This area forms important habitats for numerous species. Several lagoons and waterholes within the park provide important refuges for birds and other wildlife. History The diverse climate of Lochern was a boon for the aboriginal people, who learned to utilize the dry and wet spells. They adapted to the seasonal transformation of land, reaping its bounties. Welford Homestead is a heritage-listed homestead in the Welford National Park, Jundah, Shire of Barcoo, Queensland, Australia. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 August 1992. History The Walton pastoral run was taken up by Richard Welford in , having migrated to Australia from Britain in 1863. Welford held the Walton run for only two years before he and his stockman, Henry Hall were murdered by aborigines in about May 1872. Welford was buried on the property with a marble headstone which said:In memory of Richard Welford, B.A., Edinburgh, barrister of Lincoln's Inn, only son of Richard G. Welford, County Court Judge at Birmingham, England, murdered by blacks at Walton, 21st April, 1872, in the thirty third year of his age.In August 1872, the property was sold to the Rome brothers, who, by 1875, were calling it Welford Downs. The homestead is thought to be constructed in 1882-83 (at the time of Welford's murder there was only a hut). In 1956, the homestea ... Stone Arrangements
__NOTOC__ Aboriginal stone arrangements are a form of rock art constructed by Aboriginal Australians. Typically, they consist of stones, each of which may be about in size, laid out in a pattern extending over several metres or tens of metres. Notable examples have been made by many different Australian Aboriginal cultures, and in many case are thought to be associated with spiritual ceremonies. Particularly fine examples are in Victoria, where the stones can be very large (up to high). For example, the stone arrangement at Wurdi Youang consists of about 100 stones arranged in an egg-shaped oval about across. Each stone is well-embedded into the soil, and many have "trigger-stones" to support them. Central West Queensland
Central West Queensland is a remote region in the Australian state of Queensland which covers 396,650.2 km2. The region lies to the north of South West Queensland and south of the Gulf Country. It has a population of approximately 12,387 people. History The first exploration by Europeans was by Major Thomas Mitchell who passed through the area in 1846. Mitchell was near Isisford on the Barcoo River when his party was lacking supplies and threatened by Aboriginals. He then decided to return to Sydney, completing a successful expedition which had explored a large area of unknown country. Geography The eastern extent of the Simpson Desert lies within the region. Barcoo River
The Barcoo River in western Queensland, Australia rises on the northern slopes of the Warrego Range, flows in a south-westerly direction and unites with the Thomson River to form Cooper Creek. The first European to see the river was Thomas Mitchell in 1846, who named it Victoria River, believing it to be the same river as that named Victoria River by J. C. Wickham in 1839. It was renamed by Edmund Kennedy after a name supplied by local Aborigines. The waters of the river flow towards Lake Eyre in central Australia while those of rivers further east join the Murray-Darling basin and reach the sea in South Australia. Channel Country
The Channel Country is a region of outback Australia mostly in the state of Queensland but also in parts of South Australia, Northern Territory and New South Wales. The name comes from the numerous intertwined rivulets that cross the region, which cover 150,000 km². The Channel Country is over the Cooper and Eromanga geological basins and the Lake Eyre Basin drainage basin. Further to the east is the less arid Maranoa district.
