Wye College
The College of St Gregory and St Martin at Wye, commonly known as Wye College, was an education and research institution in the village of Wye, Kent. In 1447, Cardinal (Catholic Church), Cardinal John Kempe founded his chantry there which also educated local children. , it still includes a rare, complete example of medieval chantry college buildings. After Chantry#Abolition of Chantries Acts, 1545 and 1547, abolition in 1545, parts of the premises were variously occupied as mansion, grammar school, charity school, infant school and National school (England and Wales), national school, before purchase by Kent County Council, Kent and Surrey County Councils to provide men's technical education. Ralph Louis Wain
Ralph Louis Wain CBE FRS (29 May 1911 Hyde, Cheshire – 14 December 2000 Canterbury) was a British agricultural chemist. He read Chemistry at the University of Sheffield on scholarship, and with first class honours degree, and a Master of Science and PhD. He was advised by G.M. Bennett. He lectured in chemistry at the South Eastern Agricultural College at Wye, until 1939. During World War II, he conducted research at Long Ashton Research Station, at the University of Bristol. After the war, he was Head of the Chemistry Department and the Chair of Agricultural Chemistry at Wye College. He was Honorary Director of the Unit on Plant Growth Substances and Selective Fungicides at Wye. He lectured at University of Kent at Canterbury where he was Honorary Professor in 1977. Swanley Horticultural College
Swanley Horticultural College, founded in , was a college of horticulture in Hextable, Kent, England. It originally took only male students but by 1894 the majority of students were female and it became a women-only institution in 1903. Early history The college was registered as The Horticultural College and Produce Company, Limited on 30 January 1889. Businessman Arthur Harper Bond (1853–1940) described how he had wished to "do something in the way of applying scientific principles to fruit-growing" and met a man who offered "his" property at Swanley as its base. Bond occupied the property to set up "the Horticultural College", but it later transpired that the property belonged to naval architect and politician Edward Reed. Bond bought it from Reed as "the only way to extricate myself from a difficult position and save my pet scheme from extinction". Fungicide
Fungicides are pesticides used to kill parasitic fungi or their spores. Fungi can cause serious damage in agriculture, resulting in losses of yield and quality. Fungicides are used both in agriculture and to fight fungal infections in animals, including humans. Fungicides are also used to control oomycetes, which are not taxonomically/genetically fungi, although sharing similar methods of infecting plants. Fungicides can either be contact, translaminar or systemic. Contact fungicides are not taken up into the plant tissue and protect only the plant where the spray is deposited. Translaminar fungicides redistribute the fungicide from the upper, sprayed leaf surface to the lower, unsprayed surface. Systemic fungicides are taken up and redistributed through the xylem vessels. Plant hormones (or phytohormones) are signal molecules, produced within plants, that occur in extremely low concentrations. Plant hormones control all aspects of plant growth and development, including embryogenesis, the regulation of organ size, pathogen defense, stress tolerance and reproductive development. Unlike in animals (in which hormone production is restricted to specialized glands) each plant cell is capable of producing hormones. Bromoxynil is an organic compound with the formula HOBr2C6H2CN. It is classified as a nitrile herbicide, and as such sold under many trade names. It is a white solid.
