World Record Progression Men's Weightlifting (1993–1997)
This is the list of world records progression in men's weightlifting from 1993 and 1997. Records are maintained in each weight class for the snatch lift, clean and jerk lift, and the total for both lifts. Olympic Weightlifting
Weightlifting (often known as Olympic weightlifting) is a competitive strength athletics, strength sport in which athletes compete in lifting a barbell loaded with weight plates from the ground to overhead, with the aim of successfully lifting the heaviest weights. Athletes compete in two specific ways of lifting the barbell overhead. The ''Snatch (weightlifting), snatch'' is a wide-grip lift, in which the weighted barbell is lifted overhead in one motion. The ''clean and jerk'' is a combination lift, in which the weight is first taken from the ground to the front of the shoulders (the ''clean''), and then from the shoulders to over the head (the ''jerk''). The sport formerly included a third lift/event known as clean and press. Each weightlifter gets three attempts at both the snatch and the clean and jerk, with the snatch attempted first. Valerios Leonidis
Valerios Leonidis (; born 14 February 1966) is a Greek former Olympic medalist weightlifter and current weightlifting trainer. He has won Olympic silver medal at 1996 Atlanta Olympic games in 64 kg division. Also two silver and one bronze World Championship medals. He has competed in different weight classes from 60 kg to 69 kg. His rivalry with world-record holder Naim Süleymanoğlu in the men's 64 kg was a very popular part of the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, in which he won the silver medal. Naim Süleymanoğlu (; 23 January 1967 – 18 November 2017) was a Bulgarian Turks, Turkish Olympic weightlifting, Olympic weightlifter. He was a seven-time World Weightlifting Championships, World Weightlifting champion and a three-time List of Olympic medalists in weightlifting, Olympic gold medalist who set 51 world records. At 147 cm in height, Süleymanoğlu's short stature and great strength led to him being nicknamed "Pocket Hercules". Hafız Süleymanoğlu (born January 23, 1967), formerly known as Hafız Süleymanov, is a retired Turkish weightlifter of Azerbaijani origin competing in bantamweight and featherweight divisions.
