World Of Sport (UK TV Series)
''World of Sport'' is a British television sport programme which ran on ITV between 2 January 1965 and 28 September 1985 in competition with the BBC's ''Grandstand''. Like ''Grandstand'', the programme ran throughout Saturday afternoon. From the programme's launch until the lifting of restrictions on broadcasting hours in 1972, sports coverage was one of the few programming areas which was exempt from the restrictions. Originally sporting coverage and outside broadcasts were provided with a separate quota of broadcasting hours per year. By the start of ''World of Sport'' this amounted to 350 hours per year. This meant ''World of Sport'' was a key part of ITV's Saturday schedules, as the time the programme was on the air did not count to the overall 50 hours a week restriction on normal broadcasting hours. Dickie Davies
Richard John Davies (30 April 1928 – 19 February 2023) was a British television sports presenter who anchored '' World of Sport'' from 1968 until 1985. Early life Davies attended Oldershaw Grammar School in Wallasey after passing his eleven-plus; he then did National Service in the Royal Air Force, and worked as a purser on the and ocean liners. Career His first job in broadcasting was as an announcer for Southern Television. In the early stages of his career, Davies was known by his full name, Richard Davies, but changed to Dickie Davies at the suggestion of his ITV Sport colleague Jimmy Hill. Davies began work on ''World of Sport'' (initially called ''Wide World of Sports'') in 1965 as an understudy to Eamonn Andrews, who was paid £40,000 by ITV to present it (about £825,250 at 2022 prices)—taking over the role of presenter in 1968 when Andrews left the show. Bob Colston
Robert Colston (27 June 1928 – 24 March 2013) was a broadcaster who was famous in the United Kingdom as the voice of the football results on ITV's various Saturday afternoon football results programmes for 27 years between 1972 and 1999. Colston joined '' World of Sport'' in 1972 and read out the football results until the programme was cancelled in 1985. He continued to read the results as ITV broadcast the football scores in a stand-alone programme called ''Results Service'' which ran until 1992. The results were then featured during the Saturday teatime ITV News bulletin which Colston did until 1999. He made brief appearances on Sky Sports reading out the football results on ''Soccer Saturday'' during the 2000–01 season. Whilst reading the results, Colston inflected his voice to imply the result of a match simply through his sonorous intonation of the home team's score. Netball
Netball is a ball sport played on a rectangular court by two teams of seven players. The primary objective is to shoot a ball through the defender's goal ring while preventing the opposing team from shooting through their own. Field Hockey
Field hockey (or simply referred to as hockey in some countries where ice hockey is not popular) is a team sport structured in standard hockey format, in which each team plays with 11 players in total, made up of 10 field players and a goalkeeper. Teams must move a hockey ball around a field by hitting it with a field hockey stick, hockey stick towards the rival team's shooting circle and then into the goal (sports), goal. Kent Walton
Kent Walton (22 August 1917 – 24 August 2003), born Kenneth Walton Beckett, was a British television sports commentator, presenter and actor. He is best remembered as the predominant commentator on ITV's coverage of British professional wrestling from 1955 to 1988. Early life Despite a transatlantic accent which led many to believe he was Canadian, he was born in Cairo, Egypt, the son of the finance minister in the colonial government, and he grew up at Haslemere in Surrey. He was educated at Charterhouse. He attended the Embassy School of Acting in London and appeared in rep. ''ITV Racing'' is a programme produced by ITV Sport for races shown on ITV (ITV1 and STV) or ITV4 in the United Kingdom. The programme is referred to as ''Racing on STV'' in Northern and Central Scotland. In its previous incarnation, the show was an essential part of '' World of Sport''. The Scottish Football Association Challenge Cup, commonly known as the Scottish Cup, is a knockout cup competition in Scottish football. Arthur Montford
Arthur Montford (25 May 1929 – 26 November 2014) was a Scottish Television sports journalist, best known for his 32-year tenure as the presenter of Scottish Television's '' Scotsport''. Although he was most associated with football, he covered a number of other sports for ITV, notably golf. Early life Montford was born on 25 May 1929 to the son of a journalist, Sid, who spent a long career at the Glasgow Evening News and Daily Record. He was raised in Greenock and educated at Greenock Academy after the family moved there from Glasgow. Greenock and the Academy itself gave him a lifelong love of the town's club Morton F.C. and his friend from schooldays, Douglas Rae, owned the club later on in Montford's lifetime. Grampian Television
Grampian Television was the original name of the Channel 3 service for the north of Scotland founded in 1961 and which, decades later, was merged with the Central Belt channel STV. The northern region's coverage area includes the Northern Isles, Western Isles, Highlands (except Fort William and Lochaber), Grampian, Tayside (except the Kinross area), and parts of north Fife. Grampian went on the air on 30 September 1961. The company was bought out in 1997 by STV Group (the parent company of STV, the Channel 3 broadcaster in Central Scotland).
