Workers' Youth League (Norway)
The Workers' Youth League (, , or AUF) is Norway's largest political youth organization and is affiliated with the Norwegian Labour Party. History In 1903, the ''Norwegian Social-Democratic Youth League'' was formed, which the organization and historians consider to be the foundation of the organization. As an organizational entity, ''AUF'' took its current form in April 1927 following the merger of Left Communist Youth League and Socialist Youth League of Norway corresponding with the merger of their parent parties after the conclusion of disputes over the "Twenty-one Conditions". Its ideology is social democracy and democratic socialism. The chancellor of Germany and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Willy Brandt was a member of AUF after he fled from the Nazis in 1933 and found exile in Norway. Thorbjørn Jagland
Thorbjørn Jagland ( né Johansen; , 5 November 1950) is a Norwegian politician from the Labour Party. He served as the secretary general of the Council of Europe from 2009 to 2019. He served as the prime minister of Norway from 1996 to 1997, as the minister of Foreign Affairs from 2000 to 2001 and as the president of the Storting from 2005 to 2009. Trygve Bratteli
Trygve Martin Bratteli (11 January 1910 – 20 November 1984) was a Norwegian newspaper editor, a politician with the Norwegian Labour Party, and Nazi concentration camp survivor. He served as the prime minister of Norway from 1971 to 1972 and again from 1973 to 1976. He was president of the Nordic Council in 1978. Background Bratteli was born on the island of Nøtterøy at Færder in Vestfold, Norway. His parents were Terje Hansen Bratteli (1878–1966) and Martha Barmen (1880–1938). The Workers' Youth League affair was a political affair, where leaders of the Workers' Youth League (AUF) were charged with deliberately inflating membership numbers to receive increased government funding. Two former treasurers and two former leaders of the Oslo chapter were found guilty of fraud, and given prison sentences, for having unlawfully received in grants from the City of Oslo between 1992 and 1994. The convicted were Ragnar Bøe Elgsaas, Anders Hornslien, Bjørn Jarle Rødberg Larsen and Anders Greif Mathisen. Anders Mathisen's sentence was suspended. Background On 2 March 1995, the newspaper ''Verdens Gang'' revealed that AUF's Oslo branch had artificially inflated their membership numbers from 1992 to 1994, and as a result received NOK 600,000 more than they were entitled to in government grants. Bjørn Jarle Rødberg Larsen
Bjørn Jarle Ørnø Røberg-Larsen (born 1973, in Oslo) is a Norwegian politician for the Labour Party in the city of Elverum and in the regional parliament of Hedmark (Hedmark Fylkesting), as well as a Norwegian internet entrepreneur. He is also the editor and publisher of Sosialdemokraten.no, a blog about social democratic politics. Anders Hornslien
Anders Hornslien (born 6 December 1970 in Oslo) is a Norwegian media personality and politician for the Labour Party. He was the leader of the local chapter of the Workers' Youth League from 1991 to 1993, and served as a member of Oslo city council in the same period. During this time he became a controversial figure following the Workers' Youth League affair, for which he was sentenced to five months in jail. He served in the position of deputy representative to the Norwegian Parliament from Oslo during the terms 1993–1997 and 1997–2001. During these terms he filled in for Bjørn Tore Godal and Jens Stoltenberg while they were appointed to cabinet positions. Ragnar Bøe Elgsaas (born 8 June 1971) is a former Norwegian politician for the Labour Party. Biography He was the son of manager, Knut Elgsaas and first secretary, Johanne Margrethe Bøe.
