Workers' Stadium (1959)
The original Workers' Stadium (; often abbreviated as Gongti or ) was a multi-purpose stadium in Chaoyang, Beijing, Chaoyang, Beijing, China. The stadium was built in 1959, and was renovated in 2004 (the concrete structure strengthened, a new rotating display screen and energy-saving devices installed). The stadium was demolished in 2020 and reopened under the same name on 15 April 2023 as a Workers' Stadium (2023), new stadium built on the original site. It had a capacity of 65,094 and covered a land area of . It was one of the Ten Great Buildings constructed in 1959 for the tenth anniversary of the China, People's Republic of China. The 1500 metres or 1500-metre run is the foremost middle distance track event in athletics. The distance has been contested at the Summer Olympics since 1896 and the World Championships in Athletics since 1983. It is equivalent to 1.5 kilometers or approximately miles. The China Bowl () was the name of a proposed National Football League (NFL) pre-season exhibition game that had been scheduled to take place in August 2007, but later postponed to 2009 and ultimately canceled, between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks at the National Stadium in Beijing. The originally scheduled China Bowl was to be played at Workers' Stadium in Beijing, China, on August 8, 2007. The 2001 Summer Universiade, also known as the XXI Summer Universiade, was an international multi-sport event that took place in Beijing, China, between 22 August and 1 September. Beijing also hosted the 1990 Asian Games. A total of 6,757 athletes from 165 nations took part in 12 sports.
