Women's Suffrage In Peru

The issue was first suggested by senator Celso Bambaren Ramírez in 1867. In the early 20th-century, the issue was beginning to be lifted in public debate by pioneering women's activists such as Maria Jesus Alvarado, Zoila Aurora Cáceres, Adela Montesinos, Elvira Garcia y Garcia and Magda Portal, and Maria Jesus Alvarado was the first Peruvian woman to support women's suffrage in public in 1911. The Parliament first took up the issue in 1931–1932, a debate which ended in a compromise, in which communal suffrage was introduced. María Eleonora Silva y Silva (27 October 1930 – 16 March 2016) was a Peruvian politician. In 1956 she was among the first group of women elected to Congress, serving until 1962. Matilde Pérez Palacio Carranza (8 September 1913 – 16 August 1992) was a Peruvian educator, journalist and politician. In 1956 she was among the first group of women elected to Congress, serving until 1962, and again between 1963 and 1968. Biography Pérez was born in Lima in 1913, the daughter of Matilde Carranza Valdez and Enrique Pérez Palacio, and a granddaughter of , a Congressman from the 1860s to 1890s. She attended the Colegio Sagrados Corazones Belén and earned a commercial accountancy diploma. She later attended the Catholic University, graduating in 1934 with a bachelor's degree in philosophy, history and letters. Junín () is a Departments of Peru, department and Political division of Peru, region in the central highland (geography), highlands and westernmost Peruvian Amazon. Its capital is Huancayo.
