Women's Museum Istanbul
Women's Museum Istanbul (), located in Istanbul, Turkey, is an online museum devoted to the role played by women in the city. Launched online in 2012, the museum is Turkey's first-ever and the world's third city museum dedicated to women. The permanent exhibition of the Women's Museum Istanbul presents the biographies of women who chose a different lifestyle than that which was expected in their times. Short texts accompanying the installations in the permanent exhibition illustrate the social, cultural, economic and political dynamics of each life. Leyla Saz
Leyla Saz, also called Leyla Hanımefendi (1850–1936), was an Ottoman and later a Turkish composer, poet and writer. Biography Born in 1850, she was the daughter of İsmail Hakkı Pasha, (often called Hekim İsmail Pasha (İsmail Pasha the Doctor). She spent her childhood in the Dolmabahçe Palace as a member of the Imperial Harem. At the age of seven, she began taking piano lessons from an Italian pianist. After 1876, she studied Turkish music with Medini Aziz Efendiu. She also took private lessons in French, and later in ancient Greek and theology, while her father was the Ottoman governor of Crete. She states that the Cretan writer and political activist Elisavet Contaxaki taught her Greek. Nigâr Hanım (1856 – 1 April 1918) (), also known as Nigar Bint-i Osman, was an Ottoman poet, who pioneered modern Western styles in a feminine mode. She is a major figure in post- Tanzimat Turkish poetry. Biography Nigâr was born in Istanbul to Macar Osman Pasha (a.k.a. Adolf Farkas), an Ottoman nobleman of Hungarian origin. She was educated at the Kadıköy Fransız Mektebi (French School in Kadıköy), later receiving lectures at home from private teachers. She was able to speak eight different languages and play piano at a young age. She was married at age fourteen, but divorced after a few years of great unhappiness. Hale Asaf, originally Hale Salih (1905, Istanbul - 31 May 1938, Paris) was a Turkish painter of Georgians, Georgian, Abkhazians, Abkhazan and Circassians, Circassian ancestry.
