Witch (Zamrock Band)
Witch (often stylized as WITCH or W.I.T.C.H.) are a Zamrock band formed in the 1970s. Widely seen as the most popular Zambian band of the 1970s, WITCH (a backronym for "We Intend To Cause Havoc"), was headed by lead vocalist Emanuel "Jagari" Chanda. The band formed during Zambia's post-independence golden days, but by the late 1970s, economic collapse and increasing government authoritarianism saw WITCH, like most Zamrock bands, fading away. The band was revived in 2012 after reissues of their records became popular abroad. ''Zango'' () is the eighth studio album by Zambian band Witch. It was released on 2 June 2023 on Desert Daze Sound in partnership with Partisan Records, nearly 40 years after Witch's previous studio album, 1984's ''Kuomboka''. It is also the band's first album since 1976 to feature frontman and co-founder Emmanuel "Jagari" Chanda. Background and release After disbanding in 1985, Witch reunited in 2012, with bandleader Emmanuel "Jagari" Chanda and keyboardist Patrick Mwondela newly joined by European musicians Jacco Gardner, Nico Mauskoviç, Stefan Lilov, and JJ Whitefield. Kalindula
Kalindula is a kind of bass guitar which gives its name to a style of popular music in southern-central Africa. It originated in the late 20th century and is popular in Zambia and is also found in Malawi and Zimbabwe. Some people claim it originated in the Democratic Republic of Congo but this cannot be fully supported by the evidence. Within Zambia, Kalindula is believed to have originated in Luapula Province, particularly in the Samfya district. This genre evolved during the mid 1940s to early 60s from a local dance known as Kontolola or Pimpinika. The genre is regarded as neo-traditional music because it blends elements of popular 20th century music with traditional Zambian styles like Akalela and Infunkutu. Copperbelt Province
Copperbelt Province is a province in Zambia which covers the mineral-rich Copperbelt, and farming and bush areas to the south. It was the backbone of the Northern Rhodesian economy during British colonial rule and fuelled the hopes of the immediate post-independence period, but its economic importance was severely damaged by a crash in global copper prices in 1973. The province adjoins the Haut-Katanga province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which is similarly mineral-rich. The main cities and towns of the Copperbelt are Kitwe, Ndola, Mufulira, Luanshya, Chingola, Kalulushi and Chililabombwe.
