Willoughby Baronets
There have been four baronetcies created for persons with the surname Willoughby, three in the Baronetage of England and one in the Baronetage of Great Britain. One creation is extant as of 2008. The Willoughby Baronetcy, of Risley in the County of Derby, was created in the Baronetage of England on 29 June 1611 for Henry Willoughby. The title became extinct on his death in 1649. By his first wife Elizabeth Knollys, daughter of the privateer Sir Henry Knollys (privateer), Henry Knollys, he had a daughter Elizabeth, who married the noted antiquarian Sir Simonds d'Ewes. The Willoughby Baronetcy, of Selston in the County of Nottingham, was created in the Baronetage of England on 4 August 1660 for William Willoughby. The title became extinct on his death in 1671. Baronetage Of England
Baronets are hereditary titles awarded by the Crown. The current baronetage of the United Kingdom has replaced the earlier, existing baronetages of England, Nova Scotia, Ireland and Great Britain. To be recognised as a baronet, it is necessary to prove a claim of succession. When this has been done, the name is entered on the Official Roll of the Baronetage. Persons who have not proven their claims may not be officially styled as baronets. This was ordained by Royal warrant (document), Royal Warrant in February 1910. A baronetcy is considered vacant if the previous holder has died within the previous five years and if no one has proven their succession, and is considered dormant if no one has proven their succession in more than five years after the death of the previous incumbent. A baronet ( or ; abbreviated Bart or Bt) or the female equivalent, a baronetess (, , or ; abbreviation Btss), is the holder of a baronetcy, a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown. The title of baronet is mentioned as early as the 14th century; however, in its current usage it was created by James I of England in 1611 as a means of raising funds for the crown. Tresham Baronets
The Tresham Baronetcy, of Rushton in the County of Northamptonsire, was a title in the Baronetage of England. It was created on 29 June 1611 for Lewis Tresham. He was the son of Sir Thomas Tresham, the great-grandson of Sir Thomas Tresham and the younger brother of Francis Tresham. As a member of a prominent Roman Catholic family, Lewis was fined for recusancy in the reign of James I. The Treshams were Northamptonshire landowners, owning Lyveden New Bield at Aldwincle, and other manors at Great Houghton, Hannington, Pilton, Rushton and Sywell. Baron Willoughby of Parham was a title in the Peerage of England with two creations. The first creation was for Sir William Willoughby who was raised to the peerage under letters patent in 1547, with the remainder to his heirs male of body. An error in identifying the heir in 1680 resulted in an inadvertent novel creation by writ in 1680, without the restriction on inheritance by gender.Cruise on dignities, pg 202 The creation of the barony gave the right to a hereditary peerage and seat in the House of Lords, the upper house of Parliament. Sir John Christopher Willoughby, 5th Baronet DSO (20 February 1859 – 16 April 1918) was a British army officer, Justice of the Peace for Oxfordshire, and landowner of properties in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. After education at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, John Christopher Willoughby became in 1879 a lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion Oxford Light Infantry. He became a 2nd lieutenant in the 6th Dragoon Guards and entered the Royal Horse Guards in 1880. He served in the Egyptian campaign in 1882 (awarded medal with clasp, and bronze star), in the Nile expedition in 1884–1885 (mentioned in despatches), and with the British South Africa Company's Force in Matabeleland in 1893. Sir John Pollard Willoughby, 4th Baronet (21 April 1799 – 15 September 1866) was a British Conservative politician and civil servant. Early life and family Born at Baldon House, Marsh Baldon, Oxfordshire, Willoughby was the son of Christopher Willoughby, and was educated at Merchant Taylors' School from 1809 to 1812. After a short break at sea, he then enrolled at the Haileybury College from 1815 to 1818. Willoughby then entered the Bombay Civil Service in 1818, and was appointed assistant resident at Baroda in 1820. He married Eliza Kennedy, daughter of Colonel Michael Kennedy—a member of the Bombay Presidency army—in 1822, and then became a political agent at Kathiawar from 1828 until 1835, when he became Chief Secretary to the Government of Bombay until 1846.
