William Maule, 1st Earl Of Panmure
General William Maule, 1st Earl Panmure (1700–1782) was a Scottish soldier and politician who sat in the House of Commons for 47 years from 1735 to 1782. Life Maule was raised in France by his father the Honourable Henry Maule, younger brother of James Maule, 4th Earl of Panmure and was educated at Leyden (1718) and at the Scots College in Paris (1719). His father had fled to France with his brother James after the failed Jacobite rising of 1715. He returned to Scotland following the general pardon of 1719 and enlisted as an ensign in the 1st Foot in October 1727. He became a captain in the 25th Foot in 1737, and a captain and lieutenant-colonel in the 3rd Foot Guards in 1741. He was promoted major in 1745 and colonel of the army in 1745. He was appointed Colonel of the 25th Foot in 1747, transferring as Colonel to the 21st Foot in 1752. Brechin (; gd, Breichin) is a city and former Royal burgh in Angus, Scotland. William Ramsay Maule, 1st Baron Panmure of Brechin and Navar (27 October 1771 – 13 April 1852) was a Scottish landowner and politician. Life He was born William Ramsay, the younger son of George Ramsay, 8th Earl of Dalhousie and Elizabeth Glen. His father was the son of Jean Maule, granddaughter of George Maule, 2nd Earl of Panmure. He attended the High School in Edinburgh from 1780 to 1784. On the death of George Maule in 1782 he adopted the surname Maule. In 1782 he succeeded to the Maule estates on the death of his great-uncle William Maule, 1st Earl Panmure, and assumed by Royal licence the same year the additional surname and arms of Maule. Earl () is a rank of the nobility in the United Kingdom. The title originates in the Old English word ''eorl'', meaning "a man of noble birth or rank". The word is cognate with the Scandinavian form '' jarl'', and meant " chieftain", particularly a chieftain set to rule a territory in a king's stead. Lieutenant General William Home, 8th Earl of Home (1681 – 28 April 1761) was a Scottish peer and the British Governor of Gibraltar between 1757 and 1761. Lord Home was a well-known spendthrift. Military career He inherited the title Earl of Home in 1720 on the death of his father, Alexander Home, 7th Earl of Home. He was commissioned into the 2nd Regiment of Dragoon Guards in 1735. Home married wealthy Jamaican-English heiress Elizabeth Lawes for her fortune on Christmas Day 1742. The couple would have no children, and the Earl deserted his wife in February 1743 for unknown reasons, taking a commission as a captain in the 3rd regiment of dragoon guards in July 1743. The couple remained technically married, however, and the Countess of Home went on to become a society figure, entertaining lavishly at her London home, Home House. King's Own Scottish Borderers
The King's Own Scottish Borderers (KOSBs) was a line infantry regiment of the British Army, part of the Scottish Division. On 28 March 2006 the regiment was amalgamated with the Royal Scots, the Royal Highland Fusiliers (Princess Margaret's Own Glasgow and Ayrshire Regiment), the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment), the Highlanders (Seaforth, Gordons and Camerons), the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise's), 52nd Lowland Regiment, and 51st Highland Regiment to form the Royal Regiment of Scotland, becoming the 2nd Battalion of the new regiment. However, after just a few months the battalion merged with the Royal Scots (1st Battalion) to form the Royal Scots Borderers. Lieutenant-General John Lindsay, 20th Earl of Crawford (4 October 1702 – 25 December 1749) was a Scottish peer and the first colonel of the Black Watch on its formation in 1739. Biography Lindsay was the son of Lieutenant-General John Lindsay, 19th Earl of Crawford and Emilia Stuart and inherited his titles on the death of his father in 1714. He was educated at University of Glasgow and the Vaudeuil Military Academy, Paris. The Earl of Crawford was commissioned into the 3rd Foot Guards in 1726, but later served in the Austrian and Russian armies before returning to Britain and taking command of the Black Watch (1739–1740). General Alexander Mackay (1717 – 31 May 1789) was a Scottish soldier in the British Army, and a politician. The son of George Mackay, 3rd Lord Reay, he was the younger brother of George Mackay of Skibo (''c.''1715–1782). Military career Mackay was commissioned in the British Army in 1737, as an ensign in the 25th Foot. He was promoted to lieutenant in the 47th Foot in 1740 and to captain in Lord Loudon's Regiment in 1745. During the Jacobite rising of 1745, he was captured by Jacobite forces at the Battle of Prestonpans. Serving with his regiment in Flanders from 1747 until 1748, he received promotion to the rank of major in George Howard's Regiment of Foot on 17 February 1749, replacing Cyrus Trapaud, who was promoted to lieutenant-colonel in the same regiment. Lieutenant General George Preston (b. 1707- 31 January 1785, Weston, Bath) was in the British Army for 61 years and led the Royal Scots Greys.
