Rapid rise to prominence The first known progenitor of this family is Yves de Bellême who was probably the son of Yves de Creil,Yves de Criel and Yves de Bellême are confused by several sources and thought to be the same person by some. The Anarchy
The Anarchy was a civil war in England and Duchy of Normandy, Normandy between 1138 and 1153, which resulted in a widespread breakdown in law and order. The conflict was a war of succession precipitated by the accidental death of William Adelin (the only legitimate son of Henry I of England, Henry I), who drowned in the White Ship disaster, ''White Ship'' disaster of 1120. Rotrou III (bef. 1080 – 8 May 1144), called the Great (''le Grand''), was the Count of Perche and Mortagne from 1099. He was the son of Geoffrey II, Count of Perche, and Beatrix de Ramerupt, daughter of Hilduin IV, Count of Montdidier. He was a notable Crusader and a participant in the ''Reconquista'' in eastern Spain, even ruling the city of Tudela in Navarre from 1123 to 1131. He is commonly credited with introducing Arabian horses to the Perche, giving rise to the Percheron breed. By his creation of a monastery at La Trappe in memory of his wife, Matilda, daughter of Henry I of England, in 1122 he also laid the foundations of the later Trappists. Elias II (also Helias, ''Hélie'', ''Helyes'' or ''Élie'') (died 15 January 1151) was the younger son of Fulk V of Anjou and his first wife, Eremburga, daughter of Count Elias I of Maine. There is debate as to whether he was ever count of Maine or whether he merely made a claim to it. Elias was born no earlier than May 1114. By 1129, Elias had married Philippa, daughter of Count Rotrou III of Perche. It is possible but unlikely that Elias' father left him the county of Maine; his elder brother, Geoffrey Plantagenet was ruler of Anjou, Maine and the Touraine. Elias rebelled in 1145 with the support of Lord Robert III of Sablé, sparking a conflict known in Angevin historiography as the "war of the barons" (''guerra baronum''). Guy II of Ponthieu (–25 December 1147) was the son of William III of Ponthieu and Helie of Burgundy. Life He succeeded his father as Count of Ponthieu before 1129; this was during William's lifetime. Around 1137, he founded the Cistercian Valloires Abbey. He joined the Second Crusade under King Louis VII of France, and died of a disease on 25 December 1147 in Ephesus. ''Gesta Normannorum Ducum'' (''Deeds of the Norman Dukes'') is a chronicle originally created by the monk William of Jumièges just before 1060. In 1070 William I had William of Jumièges extend the work to detail his rights to the throne of England. In later times, Orderic Vitalis (d. c. 1142) and Robert of Torigni (d. 1186), extended the volumes to include history up until Henry I. The ''Gesta Normannorum Ducum'' by William of Jumièges has become the principal work of Norman historical writings, one of many written to glorify the Norman Conquest of England.
