Wigner–Seitz Cell
The Wigner–Seitz cell, named after Eugene Wigner and Frederick Seitz, is a primitive cell which has been constructed by applying Voronoi cell, Voronoi decomposition to a crystal lattice. It is used in the study of crystalline materials in crystallography. The unique property of a crystal is that its atoms are arranged in a regular three-dimensional array called a Lattice (group), lattice. All the properties attributed to crystalline materials stem from this highly ordered structure. Such a structure exhibits Discrete mathematics, discrete translational symmetry. In order to model and study such a periodic system, one needs a mathematical "handle" to describe the symmetry and hence draw conclusions about the material properties consequent to this symmetry. Eugene Wigner
Eugene Paul Wigner (, ; November 17, 1902 – January 1, 1995) was a Hungarian-American theoretical physicist who also contributed to mathematical physics. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1963 "for his contributions to the theory of the atomic nucleus and the elementary particles, particularly through the discovery and application of fundamental symmetry principles". A graduate of the Technical Hochschule Berlin (now Technische Universität Berlin), Wigner worked as an assistant to Karl Weissenberg and Richard Becker (physicist), Richard Becker at the Max Planck Institute for Physics, Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin, and David Hilbert at the University of Göttingen. Periodic boundary conditions (PBCs) are a set of boundary conditions which are often chosen for approximating a large (infinite) system by using a small part called a ''unit cell''. PBCs are often used in computer simulations and mathematical models. Paul Niggli (26 June 1888 – 13 January 1953) was a Swiss crystallographer, mineralogist, and petrologist who was a leader in the field of X-ray crystallography. Georgy Feodosevich Voronyi (; ; 28 April 1868 – 20 November 1908) was an Imperial Russian mathematician of Ukrainians, Ukrainian descent noted for defining the Voronoi diagram.
