''What Is Political Philosophy?'' is a 2020 book by American philosopher Charles Larmore, published by Princeton University Press. Larmore argues that political philosophy should be concerned in the first instance with the regulation of conflict in societies marked by enduring moral disagreements. He focuses on the concept of political legitimacy instead of social justice, therefore challenging both classical liberalism and recent political realist approaches. In the process, Larmore proposes a model of political liberalism that takes its bearings from the persistence of reasonable disagreement about the good and the right. Charles Larmore
Charles Larmore (born 23 March 1950) is an American philosopher. He is the W. Duncan MacMillan Family Professor of the Humanities and Professor of Philosophy at Brown University, noted for his writings on political liberalism as well as on various topics in moral philosophy and the history of philosophy. Education and career Larmore received his A.B. at Harvard (1972) and his Ph.D. at Yale (1978). He taught for many years in the philosophy department at Columbia University, and then as the Chester D. Tripp Professor and the Raymond W. & Martha Hilpert Gruner Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago in philosophy and political science. Thomas "Thom" Brooks, (born 14 October 1973) is an American-British political philosopher and legal scholar. He is Professor of Law and Government in Durham Law School at Durham University with associate membership in the Department of Philosophy and School of Government and International Affairs. Early life and education Brooks was born 14 October 1973 in New Haven, Connecticut and raised nearby in Guilford, Connecticut. He was educated at Xavier High School, an all-boys private Catholic school in Middletown, Connecticut, United States. From 1992 to 1997, he studied at William Paterson University. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in 1997, majoring in music and political science.
