Wetherby Mares' Hurdle
The Wetherby Mares' Hurdle is a Listed National Hunt horse race in Great Britain which is open to mares aged four years or older. It is run at Wetherby over a distance of about 2 miles (3,219 metres), and during its running there are nine hurdles to be jumped. The race is scheduled to take place each year in late October or early November. It was first run in 2007 over 2 miles as the Daniel Gath Homes Mares Only Hurdle Race and was won by Annie's Answer. In 2008 the race distance was increased by half a furlong due to track reconfiguration at Wetherby Racecourse and bet365 took over the sponsorship of the race between 2008 and 2011. From 2012 to 2018 OLBG were the race sponsors. It returned to the 2 miles distance from 2015. Bet365 resumed sponsorship from the 2019 running and the race is now titled the bet365 Mares' Hurdle. Wetherby Racecourse
Wetherby Racecourse is a racecourse situated near the market town of Wetherby in West Yorkshire, England, located from Leeds city centre. For most of its history the course has hosted only National Hunt racing but staged its first Flat racing fixture in April 2015. Location The Racecourse is located on the B1224 York Road, directly adjacent to the A1(M). It is situated opposite Wetherby (HM Prison). There are new access roads between North and East Wetherby and the A1(M). The racecourse can also be accessed from Walton Road at the rear of the stands. History Horse racing in Wetherby was first took place on Scaur Bank (now officially known as King George V playing fields, although still most commonly referred to as 'Scaur Bank' or 'The Ings'). Robert Thornton (jockey)
Robert "Choc" Thornton (born 14 July 1978 in Darlington) is a retired English National Hunt jockey. Robert "Chocolate" Thornton (known as Choc) was one of the United Kingdom's leading National Hunt jockeys. After growing up riding hunters with his father (a noted professional Huntsman) he started working for trainer David Nicholson in 1997 as an amateur and after immediate success became a Conditional jockey riding 71 winners during his first season in the sport. He won the Conditional Jockey's title the following year. After making his professional debut, Thornton’s performance was consistent, if unspectacular, and he consistently featured in the top 10 of the British Jumps Jockey Championship. Harry Skelton
Harry Skelton (born 20 September, 1989) is a British jockey who competes in National Hunt racing. Skelton was the 2020-2021 British Champion Jump Jockey. Career Skelton started his racing career with Richard Hannon on the flat, before switching to jump racing and joined his brother, Dan, who was assistant trainer to Paul Nicholls in Somerset. In 2009, he became the youngest winner of the Irish Grand National on Niche Market trained by Bob Buckler. In 2011, he won his first Grade 2 race with Celestial Halo in the National Spirit Hurdle at Fontwell Park. In 2013, Skelton joined his brother who had set up Dan Skelton Racing in Warwickshire as the new yards lead jockey. Daryl Jacob
Daryl Jacob is an Irish National Hunt jockey who rode for trainer Paul Nicholls as second jockey to Ruby Walsh. When Walsh left the Nicholas yard Jacob took over as principal rider. He won at the Cheltenham festival for the first time in 2011 on Zarkandar in the Triumph Hurdle. His second Cheltenham Festival win was in 2014 on Lac Fontana in the Vincent O Brien County Handicap Hurdle on the last day of the festival. However, before the start of the next race he suffered a broken leg, knee and elbow after Port Melon crashed into the rail. Jacob won the 2012 Grand National on the grey Neptune Collonges. Bridget Andrews
Bridget Andrews (born 1993) is an English National Hunt jockey. In 2018 she became the second professional female jockey to ride a winner at the Cheltenham Festival when she rode Mohaayed to victory in the County Handicap Hurdle. In 2023 she achieved her second festival win in the same race. Early life Andrews grew up on the family farm in Bedfordshire where her parents, former jockeys Simon and Joanna, train point-to-pointers. Simon Andrews rode 170 point-to-point winners in his career, while Joanna rode nine winners in a shorter career. Harry Fry (born 18 December 1986) is a British racehorse trainer specialising in National Hunt racing. Fry has trained from stables at Corscombe in Dorset since 2020, having previously been based at Seaborough in Dorset since taking out a trainer's licence in October 2012. Fry has trained 2 winners at the Cheltenham Festival, Unowhatimeanharry and Love Envoi. Prior to this he trained from the same stables but the licence was held by Paul Nicholls. Noel Fehily (born 24 December 1975) is a retired Irish professional horse racing jockey. Throughout his professional career, he has enjoyed substantial success including the King George VI Chase and Champion Hurdle, despite enduring significant injuries. Personal life In 2007, Fehily married Natasha Chappell at a wedding ceremony in Gougane Barra, County Cork. He has two brothers Eamonn and Micheal who both have achievements in racing and Gaa. Tony McCoy
Sir Anthony Peter McCoy (born 4 May 1974), commonly known as AP McCoy or Tony McCoy, is a Northern Irish former National Hunt horse racing jockey. Based in Ireland and the UK, McCoy rode a record 4,358 winners, and was Champion Jockey a record 20 consecutive times, every year that he was a professional. McCoy recorded his first winner in 1992 at age 17. On 7 November 2013 he rode his 4,000th winner, riding Mountain Tunes to victory at Towcester.
