Welsh ( or ) is a Celtic languages, Celtic language of the Brittonic languages, Brittonic subgroup that is native to the Welsh people. Welsh is spoken natively in Wales by about 18% of the population, by some in England, and in (the Welsh colony in Chubut Province, Argentina). It is spoken by smaller numbers of people in Canada and the United States descended from Welsh immigrants, within their households (especially in Nova Scotia). Historically, it has also been known in English as "British", "Cambrian", "Cambric" and "Cymric". The Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011 gave the Welsh language official status in Wales. Common Brittonic
Common Brittonic (; ; ), also known as British, Common Brythonic, or Proto-Brittonic, is a Celtic language historically spoken in Britain and Brittany from which evolved the later and modern Brittonic languages. It is a form of Insular Celtic, descended from Proto-Celtic, a theorized parent language that, by the first half of the first millennium BC, was diverging into separate dialects or languages. Pictish is linked, most probably as a sister language or a descendant branch. Evidence from early and modern Welsh shows that Common Brittonic was significantly influenced by Latin during the Roman period, especially in terms related to the church and Christianity. Welsh Orthography
Welsh orthography uses 29 letters (including eight digraphs) of the Latin script to write native Welsh words as well as established loanwords. Welsh orthography makes use of multiple diacritics, which are primarily used on vowels, namely the acute accent (), the grave accent (), the circumflex (, , or ) and the diaeresis (). They are considered variants of their base letter, i.e. they are not alphabetised separately. The Welsh alphabet also lacks (, ), (, ), (, ), (, ), and (, /). Patagonian Welsh
Patagonian Welsh () is a variety of the Welsh language spoken in Y Wladfa, the Welsh settlement in Patagonia, Chubut Province, Argentina. Patagonian Welsh has developed to be a distinct dialect of Welsh, different from the several dialects used in Wales itself; however, the dialects have a high degree of mutual intelligibility, and speakers from Wales and Patagonia are able to communicate readily. Numerous toponyms throughout the Chubut Valley are of Welsh origin. Teachers are sent to teach the language and to train local tutors in the Welsh language, and there is some prestige in knowing the language, even among those not of Welsh descent. Powyseg (or ''Powysian''; or ) is a dialect of the Welsh language spoken in the central areas of Wales. It is one of the four major dialects of Welsh spoken in the United Kingdom. Its usage is most predominantly found within northern Powys county in Wales and the former Kingdom of Powys city Wroxeter (formerly in Welsh) in England. Gwyndodeg
or is one of the four traditional dialects of the Welsh language. Spoken in north-west Wales, the language takes its name from the post-roman Kingdom of Gwynedd. Writing in 1900, John Rhŷs and David Brynmor Jones give a boundary for the dialect's southern extent as "the stream of Wyrai at Llanrhystud". Today it is most associated with Anglesey, Gwynedd and west Conwy County Borough, with the dialectal boundary (with Powyseg) in the Clwyd area.
