Waves '98
''Waves '98'' is a 2015 animated, live-action short film written and directed by Lebanese artist and filmmaker Ely Dagher. It was awarded the Short Film Palme d'Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. Plot Omar is a high-school student living in the northern suburbs of Beirut in the late 1990s. Disillusioned with his life in the suburbs of segregated Beirut, Omar's discovery lures him into the depths of the city. Immersed into a world that is so close yet so isolated from his reality that he eventually finds himself struggling to keep his attachments, his sense of home. The film is a meditation on Dagher's relationship to Beirut, his hometown, since he has left it for Brussels. Ely Dagher
Ely Dagher is a Lebanese director, screenwriter and artist known for his short film '' Waves '98'' and most recently his first feature film '' The Sea Ahead'' which had its premiere at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival Early years Ely graduated from Goldsmiths College in 2009 with a master's degree in Art and Media Cultures. Previously he had received a bachelor's degree in graphic arts and illustration as well as a Bachelors in animation at the Academie Libanaise Des Beaux Arts in Lebanon. Career Dagher's film '' Waves '98'' won the Short Film Palme d'Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, becoming the first Lebanese film to ever receive the award. Abderrahmane Sissako (; born 13 October 1961) is a Mauritanian-born Malian film director and producer. His film '' Waiting for Happiness'' (''Heremakono'') was screened at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival official selection under Un Certain Regard, winning a FIPRESCI Prize. His 2006 film ''Bamako'' received much attention. Sissako's themes include globalisation, exile and the displacement of people. Maroun Baghdadi
Maroun Bagdadi (also Baghdadi; , ; January 21, 1950 – December 10, 1993) was a Lebanon, Lebanese Film Director, film director known for his vivid portrayal of Lebanon's civil war. Bagdadi was internationally the best-known Lebanese filmmaker of his generation. He worked with American producer/director Francis Coppola and made several films in French that became hits in France.
