Water Polo At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's Tournament
The women's water polo tournament at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing was held from 11 August to 21 August at the Ying Tung Natatorium. Teams from eight nations competed, seeded into two groups for the preliminary round. 20 games were played, 12 of them in the preliminary round (each team played the other teams in the group). Eight games were played in the final round. Format The tournament featured eight teams, separated into two groups of four teams. Each team played the other three teams in its pool once in a round-robin format. The first-place team in each pool qualified directly for the semifinal, the second- and third-place teams moved on to the quarterfinal round, and the fourth-place teams played each other in a seventh place game. The winners of the quarterfinal games moved on to the semifinals to face the top teams from each pool, while the quarterfinal losers played a fifth place classification game. Mercédesz Stieber
Mercédesz Stieber (born 4 September 1974) is a water polo player from Hungary, who competed for her native country at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece and Beijing 2008. She won the 1994 and 2005 Water polo at the World Aquatics Championships, World Championships and the 1991 and 2001 European Water Polo Championship, European Championships. Anikó Pelle
Anikó Pelle (born 28 September 1978) is a Hungarian and Italian water polo player who played for the University of Southern California from 1999 to 2002, and the Hungary women's national team in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. In 2000, Pelle received the Peter J. Cutino Award as the nation's top women's collegiate water polo player. Anikó Pelle was USC's top offensive threat as a 1999 freshman, scoring a team-high 52 goals, leading to All-America honors. With a 3.44 GPA, Pelle made the 1999 American Water Polo Coaches Association All-Academic team. After recording a team-leading 64 goals as a sophomore in 2000, she earned the Peter J. Alison Gregorka
Alison Gregorka (born June 29, 1985) is an American water polo player. She started playing at the age of 14. She was a member of the US water polo team that won a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She is now coaching high school water polo in Lake Oswego, Oregon. She also appeared on the show '' Wipeout'' on ABC during the winter version of the show. Career Gregorka played NCAA women's water polo at Stanford University. In June 2009, Gregorka was named to the USA water polo women's senior national team for the 2009 FINA World Championships.
