Water Polo At The 2016 Summer Olympics – Women's Tournament
The women's tournament of Water polo at the 2016 Summer Olympics at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, began on 9 August and ended on 19 August 2016. Games were held at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre and the Olympic Aquatics Stadium. The United States women's national water polo team, United States won the gold medal by defeating Italy women's national water polo team, Italy 12–5 in the final. Russia women's national water polo team, Russia captured bronze, beating Hungary women's national water polo team, Hungary 19–18. 2016 Women's European Water Polo Championship
The 2016 Women's European Water Polo Championship was held from 10 to 22 January 2016 in Belgrade, Serbia. Hungary won their third title by defeating the Netherlands 9–7 in the final. Italy captured the bronze medal after a 10–9 win over Spain. Qualification Format The twelve teams were split into two groups of six teams. Evgeniya Andreyevna Ivanova (; born 26 July 1987) is a Russian water polo player. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, she competed for the Russian team in the women's event. Ashleigh Southern (born 22 October 1992) is an Australian water polo player. She is a centre forward or outside shooter who has represented Australia on the junior and senior national teams. She won a gold medal at the 2009 Youth Olympic Festival, a silver medal at the 2010 FINA Women's Water Polo World Cup, a bronze medal at the 2011 FINE World League and a bronze medal at the 2011 FINA Junior World Championships. The Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre () is an aquatics centre that is part of the City of Sports Complex in the Barra da Tijuca district of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is part of the investments made by the city to host the swimming, synchronized swimming and diving competitions of the 2007 Pan American Games. During the 2016 Summer Olympics, it hosted group matches of water polo and the synchronised swimming and diving (sport), diving competitions.
