Water Polo At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's Tournament
The men's tournament of water polo at the 2008 Summer Olympics at Beijing, People's Republic of China, began on 10 August and lasted until 24 August 2008. All games were held at the Ying Tung Natatorium. Teams from twelve nations competed, seeded into two groups for the preliminary round. 44 games were played, 30 of them in the preliminary round (each team played the other teams in the group). Seven classification games and seven games in the medal round were also played. Format The format of water polo at the 2008 Summer Olympics: *Twelve teams are divided into two preliminary groups, composed of six teams each, and play a single round robin in each group. *The first placed team of each group will have a bye. The second and third placed teams will play against each other in a cross-group format. Tibor Benedek
Tibor Benedek (12 July 1972 – 18 June 2020) was a Hungarian professional water polo player and coach, widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. He played on the gold medal squads at the 2000 Summer Olympics, 2004 Summer Olympics and 2008 Summer Olympics. Benedek also competed at the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics, where the Hungarian team placed 6th and 4th, respectively. Benedek was the head coach of Hungary men's national water polo team between 2013 and 2016. Benedek was named ''Hungarian Water Polo Player of the Year'' in 1992, 1993 and 1994. Tamás Molnár
Tamás Molnár (born 2 August 1975) is a Hungarian former water polo player, who played on the gold medal squads at the 2000 Summer Olympics, 2004 Summer Olympics and 2008 Summer Olympics. He is one of ten male athletes who won three Olympic gold medals in water polo. He made his debut for the national team in 1997, and was named ''Hungarian Water Polo Player of the Year'' in 1998. Norbert Madaras (born 1 December 1979 in Eger) is a Hungarian water polo player, who won the gold medal with the men's national team at the 2004 Summer Olympics and 2008 Summer Olympics. Péter Biros (born 5 April 1976) is a Hungarian former water polo player, who played on the gold medal squads at the 2000 Summer Olympics, 2004 Summer Olympics and 2008 Summer Olympics, which makes him one of six male athletes who won three Olympic gold medals in water polo. Anastasios Schizas (born 18 February 1977) is a Greek retired water polo player who competed in the 2004 Summer Olympics (4th place) and the 2008 Summer Olympics (7th place). Schizas was part of the Greece men's national water polo team that won the Bronze Medal in the 2005 World Championship in Montreal and the Bronze Medal in the 2004 World League in Long Beach. Gavin Woods (water Polo)
Gavin Woods (born 1 March 1978) is an Australian water polo player. He was a member of Australia's Olympic squad at the 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics. He began his career playing centre-back but switched to centre-forward for the 2004 Olympics. His father David is a three-time Olympian (1964, 1968 and 1972) and former coach of the Australian women's team (1991–1994), while his sister Taryn and his cousin Bronwyn Mayer were in the women's national team at the Sydney Olympics. Thomas Whalan (born 13 October 1980) is an Australian water polo player who competed in the 2000 Summer Olympics, in the 2004 Summer Olympics (Vice-Captain), in the 2008 Summer Olympics (Captain) and in the 2012 Summer Olympics representing Australia in over 350 internationals. Georgios Ntoskas (born 11 November 1984) is a retired Greek water polo player who competed in the 2008 Summer Olympics (7th place) with the Greece men's national water polo team.
