Walthamstow Avenue F.C.
Walthamstow Avenue Football Club was an English football club based in Walthamstow in London. Based at Green Pond Road, they played in dark and light blue hooped shirts, and light blue shorts. The club was established in 1900, and was one of the most successful amateur clubs in the country during the 1950s. The club ceased to exist in 1988 when it merged with Leytonstone/Ilford, who later became Redbridge Forest and merged with Dagenham to form Dagenham and Redbridge. They have since been revived as an amateur football club, currently playing in the Sunday Essex Corinthian League. History Founded in 1900, the club joined Division Two of the London League in 1901, but left at the end of the season. In 1929 they joined the Athenian League and won the league in their first season. In 1930–31 they reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time, losing 5–1 at home to Watford. Green Pond Road was a football stadium in Walthamstow, London and the home ground of Walthamstow Avenue F.C., Walthamstow Avenue until they merged with Leytonstone F.C., Leytonstone & Ilford F.C., Ilford to form Redbridge Forest F.C., Redbridge Forest, a precursor to Dagenham & Redbridge F.C., Dagenham & Redbridge. The ground was often simply called The Green Pond or The Pond. History The stadium was used for one game during the Football at the 1948 Summer Olympics, football tournament of the 1948 Summer Olympics. The last game played at Green Pond Road was the last game of the 1988–89 season (on Saturday 6 May 1989), when Redbridge Forest F.C., Leytonstone/Ilford defeated Farnborough Town 5–3. The 1952–53 FA Cup was the 72nd season of the world's oldest football cup competition, the Football Association Challenge Cup, commonly known as the FA Cup. Blackpool won the competition for the first time, beating Bolton Wanderers 4–3 in the final at Wembley. Matches were scheduled to be played at the stadium of the team named first on the date specified for each round, which was always a Saturday. Some matches, however, might be rescheduled for other days if there were clashes with games for other competitions or the weather was inclement. If scores were level after 90 minutes had been played, a replay would take place at the stadium of the second-named team later the same week. The FA Amateur Cup was an English football competition for amateur clubs. It commenced in 1893 and ended in 1974 when the Football Association abolished official amateur status. History Following the legalisation of professionalism within football, professional teams quickly came to dominate the sport's main national knock-out tournament, the FA Cup.
