Walter MacFarlane
Walter MacFarlane or MacFarlan (died 8 June 1767) was a Scottish antiquarian and 20th chief of the Clan MacFarlane. MacFarlane was the second son of John MacFarlan of Arrochar, Argyll, Arrochar (d. 1705), chief of clan MacFarlane, and Helen (d. 1741), daughter of Robert, 2nd Viscount of Arbuthnott.Pollard and Du Toit 2005. His date of birth is uncertain: he is known to have been under twenty-one in 1709, so was certainly born after 1689, and possibly not long before the death of his father in 1705, when he succeeded as chief of Clan MacFarlane. He was the author of a number of "collections", among them multi-volume genealogical works. His ''Geographical Collections relating to Scotland'', a work in three volumes that collected historical, geographical, and folkloristic information dating from 1600 to 1730. Clan MacFarlane (Scottish Gaelic: Clann Phàrlain ) is a Scottish highlands, Highland Scottish clan. Descended from the medieval Earls of Lennox, the MacFarlanes occupied the land forming the western shore of Loch Lomond from Tarbet, Argyll, Tarbet up-wards. From Loch Sloy, a small sheet of water near the foot of Ben Vorlich, Loch Lomond, Ben Vorlich, they took their war cry of ''Loch Slòigh''. The clan was noted for the night time cattle raiding of neighbouring clan lands, (particularly those of Clan Colquhoun), and as such a full moon became known locally as "MacFarlane's Lantern". The ancestral lands of the clan were held by the Scottish clan chief, chiefs until they were sold off for debts, in 1767. Since 1866 the chiefship has been dormant, no one having claimed or obtained rematriculation of the Chief Arms, making Clan MacFarlane a supposed armigerous clan.
