Wallace is a census-designated place (CDP) at the far west edge of Calaveras County, California, United States on State Route 12. The population was 479 at the 2020 census, up from 403 at the 2010 census. Name On the 1883 map of the town site is the name of the surveyor, John Herbert Wallace. It has been widely assumed that he is the one the town is named after. However, according to historian Sal Manna in the July 2006 issue of Las Calaveras, the quarterly magazine of the Calaveras County Historical Society, the town is named for John Herbert Wallace's father, John Wallace, who was a well-known engineer and surveyor in the area. He had been elected San Joaquin County surveyor. John Wallace was also an elder brother of Alfred Russel Wallace, a leading 19th century British naturalist who independently developed a theory of natural selection around the same time as Charles Darwin. The Clan Wallace is a Scottish Lowlands, Lowlands Scottish Clan and is officially recognized as such by the Lord Lyon King of Arms. The most famous member of the clan was the Scottish patriot William Wallace of the late 13th and early 14th centuries. The Rural Municipality of Wallace-Woodworth is a rural municipality (RM) in the Canadian province of Manitoba that incorporated on January 1, 2015, via the amalgamation of the RMs of Wallace and Woodworth and the village of Elkhorn. North Perth is a lower-tier municipality in Ontario, Canada. Its name is based on its location in the northern portion of Perth County, Ontario, Perth County. Wallace is a rural community in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, Canada. History Originally called Remsheg (or Ramshag), meaning "the place between" in the Mi'kmaq language. The homes of the Acadians who lived in the village were burned as part of the Bay of Fundy Campaign (1755) during the French and Indian War. Wallace and near-by Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia were the first villages in Acadia to be burned because they were the gateway through which Acadians supplied the French Fortress Louisbourg.
