Veil
A veil is an article of clothing or hanging cloth that is intended to cover some part of the head or face, or an object of some significance. Veiling has a long history in European, Asian, and African societies. The practice has been prominent in different forms in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The practice of veiling is especially associated with women and sacred objects, though in some cultures, it is men, rather than women, who are expected to wear a veil. Besides its enduring religious significance, veiling continues to play a role in some modern secular contexts, such as wedding customs. Etymology The English word ''veil'' ultimately originates from Latin '' vēlum'', which also means "sail," from Proto-Indo-European ''*wegʰslom'', from the verbal root ''*wegʰ-'' "to drive, to move or ride in a vehicle" (compare ''way'' and '' wain'') and the tool/instrument suffix ''*-slo-'', because the sail makes the ship move. Compare the diminutive form '' vexillum'', and the Sl ...

Black Sun (occult Symbol)
The Black Sun (german: Schwarze Sonne) is a type of sun wheel (German: ) symbol originating in Nazi Germany and later employed by neo-Nazis and other far-right individuals and groups. The symbol's design consists of twelve radial ''sig'' runes, similar to the symbols employed by the SS in their logo. It first appeared in Nazi Germany as a design element in a castle at Wewelsburg remodeled and expanded by the head of the SS, Heinrich Himmler, which he intended to be a center for the SS. It is unknown whether the design had a name or held any particular significance among the SS. Its association with the occult originates with a 1991 German novel, ''Die Schwarze Sonne von Tashi Lhunpo'' ("''The Black Sun of Tashi Lhunpo''"), by the pseudonymous author Russell McCloud. The book links the Wewelsburg mosaic with the neo-Nazi concept of the "Black Sun", invented by former SS officer Wilhelm Landig as a substitute for the Nazi swastika. The Anti-Defamation League notes that though ...

Video Encoded Invisible Light
Video Encoded Invisible Light (VEIL) is a technology for encoding low-bandwidth digital data bitstream in video signal, developed by VEIL Interactive Technologies. VEIL is compatible with multiple formats of video signals, including PAL, SECAM, and NTSC. The technology is based on a steganographically encoded data stream in the luminance of the videosignal. A recent application of VEIL, the VEIL Rights Assertion Mark (VRAM or V-RAM) is a copy-restriction signal that can be used to ask devices to apply DRM technology. This has been seen as analogous to the broadcast flag. It is also known as "CGMS-A plus VEIL" and "broadcast flag on steroids." There are two versions of VEIL on the market: * VEIL-I, or VEIL 1, has raw speed of 120 bits per second. It is used for unidirectional communication (TV→devices) with simple devices or toys, and to deliver coupons with TV advertising. It manipulates the luminance of the video signal in ways difficult to perceive to human eye. * VEIL-I ...

Veil (cosmetics)
Face powder is a cosmetic product applied to the face to serve different functions, typically to beautify the face. Originating from ancient Egypt, face powder has had different social uses across cultures and in modern times, it is typically used to set makeup, brighten the skin and contour the face. Face powders generally come in two main types. One of which is loose powder, which is used to assist with oily skin in absorbing excess moisture and mattifying the face to reduce shininess. The other is pressed powder which conceals blemishes and maximises coverage. The use of face powder has contributed to beauty standards throughout history. In ancient Europe and Asia, a whitened face with a smooth complexion signalled a woman of high status. The prevalence of this trend was carried throughout the Crusades and Medieval era. During this time, women used harmful ingredients as face powder including bleaches, lead and lye. Early history Egypt Archaeological remains and chem ...

The Veils
The Veils are an English/New Zealand indie rock band fronted by singer and songwriter Finn Andrews. History Early years, ''The Runaway Found'' (2001–2004) Finn Andrews was born in London but spent his teenage years at high school in Auckland, New Zealand. Largely disinterested in school, Finn was also playing in many bands (one of which met and played regularly in a folk club on Mt Victoria in Devonport, Auckland) and writing the songs that would later comprise The Veils debut album '' The Runaway Found''. When he was 16, a set of demos he sent to record companies created a stir and led to invitations for him to return to London and make a record. The Veils were signed almost immediately to Blanco y Negro, an indie/major hybrid imprint led by Rough Trade's boss Geoff Travis. On 19 August 2002 the band released a promo only single " Death & Co.", while a proper commercial single release came three months later, on 18 November, for "More Heat Than Light" followed by " T ...

Veil (album)
''Veil'' is the fourth studio album by American noise rock band Band of Susans. After establishing their "classic-line up" with their previous album '' The Word and the Flesh'' (1991), and recording the EP ''Now'' (1992), the band aimed for a new, more sonic and experimental direction on ''Veil'', after the more song-centirc approach to ''The Word and the Flesh''. Recording the album in early 1993, ''Veil'' shows the band expand the margins of their sound with a more experimental approach. The album was described as "smokey" by one critic and an "epic swell of guitar and noise" by another. The album has been said to combine " R&B rhythms with crushed sonic shards," and has been compared to, and is sometimes considered to be shoegazing music. The album was released in July 1993 by Restless Records in the United States and by Rough Trade Records in Germany. It was a critical success, with critics complimenting its sonic and textural sound. '' Melody Maker'' said "''this'' is the ...
