Vérité (political Party)
Plateforme Vérité (English: Truth Platform) was a Haitian political party co-founded by former president René Préval. After the 2015-16 legislative elections, Vérité emerged as the second largest party behind only the PHTK, winning 17 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and three in the Senate. Vérité's candidate for the 2015 presidential election, Jacky Lumarque, at the time the rector of Quisqueya University, was removed from the official ballot by the Conseil Électoral Provisoire (CEP), Haiti's official election body. According to the CEP, they were unable to obtain a document showing that Lumarque had not misused public money during his tenure as a member of a governmental education commission during the presidency of René Préval, although the Court of Auditors held that he did not require such a document, since he was not tasked with the handling of public money as a member of the commission. René Préval
René Garcia Préval (; 17 January 1943 – 3 March 2017) was a Haitian Politics of Haiti, politician and agronomist who twice was President of Haiti, from early 1996 to early 2001, and again from mid-2006 to mid-2011. He was also List of Prime Ministers of Haiti, Prime Minister from early to late 1991 under the presidency of Jean-Bertrand Aristide. In addition to being the first elected head of state since independence to serve a full term, the first to be elected to full terms of office without succeeding, the first to peacefully transfer power, and the first former prime minister to be elected president, Préval was also the first elected head of state in Haitian history to do so. Préval promoted privatization of government companies, agrarian reform, and investigations of human rights abuses. Quisqueya University
Quisqueya University (), founded in 1988, is a private Haitian university located in Port-au-Prince. The coordinator of the university's establishment and its first rector, from 1990 to 1995, was Jacques-Édouard Alexis who became Prime Minister of Haiti in 1999. The institution is considered to be Haiti's leading private university. Etymology "Quisqueya" (from Quizqueia), meaning "great thing" or "big land", is one of the former names of the island of Hispaniola; the island of Hispaniola comprises Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Ouest (department)
Ouest (French language, French, ) or Lwès (Haitian Creole; both meaning "West") is one of the ten departments of Haiti. It is located in south-central Haiti, linking the Great-North and the Tiburon Peninsula. It is the jurisdictional seat of the national capital, the city of Port-au-Prince. It has an area of and a population of 4,029,705 (2015 estimate), making it both the largest department by area and the most populated department in Haiti. Nord (Haitian Department)
Nord ( French, ) or Nò (Haitian Creole; both meaning "North") is one of the ten departments of Haiti and located in northern Haiti. It has an area of and a population of 1,067,177 (2015). Its capital is Cap-Haïtien. History Taino Period The department was part of the Chiefdom of Marien with settlements such as Guarico in Limonade and Guanawari in Grande-Rivière-du-Nord. Cité Soleil
Cité Soleil (; ; English: ) is an extremely impoverished and densely populated commune located in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area in Haiti. Cité Soleil originally developed as a shanty town and grew to an estimated 200,000 to 400,000 residents, the majority of whom live in extreme poverty. The area is generally regarded as one of the poorest and most dangerous areas of the Western Hemisphere and it is one of the biggest slums in the Northern Hemisphere. Jovenel Moïse
Jovenel Moïse (; ; 26 June 1968 – 7 July 2021) was a Haitian politician and Businessperson, businessman who served as President of Haiti from 2017 until Assassination of Jovenel Moïse, his assassination in 2021. Moïse assumed the presidency in February 2017 following his victory the November 2016 Haitian presidential election. Provisional Electoral Council
The Provisional Electoral Council ( French: ''Conseil Électoral Provisoire'', , CEP; Haitian Creole: ''Konsèy Elektoral Pwovizwa'') is the electoral commission of Haiti. The CEP is responsible for presidential elections and parliamentary elections, and is Haiti's main and only legal election agency. It was dissolved in September 2021 by acting Prime Minister Ariel Henry. In September 2024, the Transitional Presidential Council reestablished the CEP in preparation for the next Haitian general election in 2026. 2015 Haitian Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Haiti on 25 October 2015, alongside local elections and the second round of the legislative elections. Incumbent President Michel Martelly was constitutionally barred from running. As no candidate received a majority of the vote in the first round, a runoff was to be held on 27 December 2015. On 22 December the Conseil Electoral Provisoire (CEP) announced that the runoff has been postponed indefinitely. However, on 1 January 2016 President Michel Martelly announced that the runoff would be held on 17 January, but on 7 January the President changed the date to 24 January. Patriotic Unity (, INITE), is a political party in Haiti founded on 28 November 2009. Its dissolution had been claimed by former leading members on 30 April 2019 but was then disputed by the current leadership. Its founder and leader was René Préval, who served as President of Haiti from 2006 to 2011. Haitian Tèt Kale Party
The Haitian Tèt Kale Party (, , PHTK) is a Haitian political party. ''Tèt Kale'' means "Bald Headed" in Haitian Creole, and is a reference to former president Michel Martelly's appearance. History The party was formally constituted on 16 August 2012. Although then President Michel Martelly was never a member of the party, PHTK had affinities with the government, and Martelly has heavily been associated with the party, with Jovenel Moïse often characterized as his hand-picked successor. For the 2015 presidential election, Jovenel Moïse was presented as the party's candidate. 2015–16 Haitian Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Haiti on 9 August 2015, with a second round initially planned for 25 October. Two-thirds of the Senate and all members of the Chamber of Deputies were up for election. International observers reported that early rounds of voting have experienced significant fraud, including people voting more than once due to failure of indelible ink, vote buying due to lack of secrecy, poor training of election workers, poor tracking of political parties, and other problems. This has resulted in the nullification of some results and rescheduling of re-runs.
