Vulcain (rocket Engine)
Vulcain is a family of European first stage rocket engines for Ariane 5 and Ariane 6. Its development began in 1988 and the first flight was completed in 1996. The updated version of the engine, Vulcain 2, was first successfully flown in 2005. Both members of the family use liquid oxygen/liquid hydrogen cryogenic fuel. The new version for Ariane 6 is called Vulcain 2.1. History The Vulcain rocket engine is named in French for Vulcan, the ancient Roman god of fire. Its development, carried out by a European partnership, began in 1988 with the Ariane 5 rocket program. It first flew in 1996 powering the ill-fated flight 501 without being the cause of the disaster, and had its first successful flight in 1997 (flight 502). In 2002 the upgraded Vulcain 2 with 20% more thrust first flew on flight 157, although a problem with the engine turned the flight into a failure. ''Vulcain'' (M611) is a ''Vulcain''-class minesweeper of the French Navy. She is classed by the French Navy as a BBPD type vessel (French: ''bâtiment-base de plongeurs démineurs'') and is used as a base ship for clearance divers. Construction and career ''Vulcain'' was launched on 17 January 1986 and commissioned on 11 October.Saunders, p. 242 She is based in Cherbourg Naval Base, in Cherbourg, France, and is run by the 1st GPD ''Groupement de Plongeurs démineurs'', a group of French Army clearance divers. Vulcain Prize
The CST Award for Best Artist-Technician () is an independent film award created in 2003. It rewards the work of a technician for his or her collaboration in the creation of a film from the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival. It is awarded by a special jury, appointed by the ''Superior Technical Commission of Image and Sound'' ( or CST). History In 1951, the CST created the ''Technical Grand Prize'' () of the CST, awarded during the Cannes Film Festival. That prize existed until 2000. In 2003, Pierre-William Glenn, president of the CST, struggled to once again have a prize awarded to a technician during the Cannes Film Festival. Thus, the ''Vulcan Award of the Technical Artist'' was born as a part of the festival roster and approved by the festival's president Gilles Jacob.
