In the United States, electoral fraud, or voter fraud, involves illegal voting in or manipulation of United States elections. Types of fraud include voter impersonation or in-person voter fraud, Postal voting in the United States, mail-in or absentee ballot fraud, illegal Noncitizen voting in the United States, voting by noncitizens, and double voting. The United States government defines voter or ballot fraud as one of three broad categories of federal election crimes, the other two being Campaign finance in the United States, campaign finance crimes and Voter suppression in the United States, civil rights violations. Electoral fraud is extremely rare in the United States and is often by accident. Mail-in voter fraud occurs more often than in-person voter fraud. Electoral fraud, sometimes referred to as election manipulation, voter fraud, or vote rigging, involves illegal interference with the process of an election, either by increasing the vote share of a favored candidate, depressing the vote share of rival candidates, or both. It differs from but often goes hand-in-hand with voter suppression. What exactly constitutes electoral fraud varies from country to country, though the goal is often election subversion.
