150px The 1980 Women's Olympic Volleyball Tournament was the 5th edition of the event, organized by the world's governing body, the FIVB in conjunction with the IOC. It was held in Moscow, Soviet Union from 21 to 29 July 1980. Qualification * Notes: :1. United States was the 1979 NORCECA Championship runners-up (champions Cuba, were already qualified as World champions), but together with China (1979 Asian champion), Japan (1976 Olympic champion) and other countries, boycotted the games. :2. Brazil, Bulgaria and Hungary replaced China, Japan and the United States. Format The tournament was played in two different stages. Luzhniki Small Sports Arena
The Luzhniki Small Sports Arena (formerly, the Minor Arena of the Central Lenin Stadium; ) is an 8,700-seat indoor arena that is part of the Luzhniki Sports Complex in Moscow, Russia. The arena was built in 1956 in the Soviet Union. It hosted volleyball competitions during the 1980 Summer Olympics. It also hosted events of the 1973 Summer Universiade, 1986 Goodwill Games, Spartakiads of the Peoples of the USSR, Legends Cup 2018 and 2020 and others. A single-elimination knockout, or sudden-death tournament is a type of elimination tournament where the loser of a match-up is immediately eliminated from the tournament. Each winner will play another in the next round, until the final match-up, whose winner becomes the tournament champion(s).
