Virginia's Explore Park
Explore Park is a passive recreation facility operated by the Roanoke County Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism. The park is located at milepost 115 on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Roanoke County, Virginia, with of the park lying in Roanoke County and in adjacent Bedford County, Virginia, Bedford County. It includes various restored local historical structures and both hiking and biking trails, along with access to the Roanoke River for recreational use via an external county road. The park is located near the Canyon, gorge where the Roanoke River leaves the Roanoke Valley. Fried Pickle
Fried pickles are a side dish and appetizer found commonly in the Southern U.S. They are made by deep-frying sliced battered dill pickles. History Fried pickles first appeared on the American culinary scene in the early 1960s. The first known fried pickle recipe was printed in the Oakland Tribune on November 19, 1962, for "French Fried Pickles", which called for using sweet pickle slices and pancake mix. Fried dill pickles were popularized by Bernell "Fatman" Austin in 1964 at the Duchess Drive In located in Atkins, Arkansas. The Fatman's recipe is only known to his family and used once each year at the annual Picklefest in Atkins, held each May. Salem is an independent city in the U.S. commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 25,346. It is the county seat of Roanoke County, although the two are separate jurisdictions. Fort Vause (also known as Fort Vaux, Voss, Vass, Vance, or "Vass' Fort", and renamed Fort Lyttelton in 1757) was built in 1753 in Montgomery County, Virginia, by Ephraim Vause. Ephraim Vause
Ephraim Vause (1718–1774) was a pioneer of southwestern Virginia, and Fort Vause in present day Shawsville, Virginia, was named after him. "This fort was named for Captain Ephraim Vause who was the first settler in that region. His name has been given various spellings, Vause, Voss, Vaus, Vass and Vaux." Biography He was originally from his plantation in Evesham, New Jersey, and married Theodosia Hewlings (Hulings) in 1738 in Philadelphia. Pigg River
The Pigg River is a river in south-west Virginia in the United States. It is a tributary of the Roanoke River, which flows to the Atlantic Ocean via Albemarle Sound.
