Virginia House Of Delegates
The Virginia House of Delegates is one of the two parts of the Virginia General Assembly, the other being the Senate of Virginia. It has 100 members elected for terms of two years; unlike most states, these elections take place during odd-numbered years. The House is presided over by the Speaker of the House, who is elected from among the House membership by the Delegates. The Speaker is usually a member of the majority party and, as Speaker, becomes the most powerful member of the House. The House shares legislative power with the Senate of Virginia, the upper house of the Virginia General Assembly. The House of Delegates is the modern-day successor to the Virginia House of Burgesses, which first met at Jamestown in 1619. The House is divided into Democratic and Republican caucuses. Robin A. Abbott (born January 20, 1953, in Orlando, Florida) is an American politician, consumer rights advocate, and attorney. Phillip A. Hamilton (born April 9, 1952) is a former Virginia Republican Party politician. A member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1988 until his resignation in 2009, he represented the 93rd district on the Virginia Peninsula, made up of parts of James City County and the city of Newport News. Hamilton was convicted and sentenced by a U.S. district court jury to 9 1/2 years in prison for federal bribery and extortion charges in August 2011 for soliciting employees of Old Dominion University for a paid position in exchange for a legislative budget amendment that included funding for the position. He was ordered to begin serving his sentence in September 2011. Hamilton was released from federal prison after completing his sentence on October 22, 2019.
