Virginia's 17th Senate district is one of 40 districts in the Senate of Virginia. It has been represented by Republican Party (United States), Republican Bryce Reeves since his 2011 victory over incumbent Democratic Party (United States), Democrat Edd Houck. Geography District 17 stretches from Fredericksburg, Virginia, Fredericksburg in the east to the suburbs of Charlottesville, Virginia, Charlottesville in Albemarle County, Virginia, Albemarle County in the west, covering all of Orange County, Virginia, Orange County and parts of Culpeper County, Virginia, Culpeper County, Louisa County, Virginia, Louisa County, and Spotsylvania County, Virginia, Spotsylvania County in between. Amy Laufer
Amy Josephine Laufer (born May 13) is an American Democrat from Virginia. She was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in the 2023 Virginia House of Delegates election from the Virginia's 55th House District. Early life Laufer, one of eight children, grew up on a dairy farm in rural Wisconsin. She became the first in her family to attend college, and she graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, earning a bachelor's degree in geology. She then joined the Peace Corps, teaching elementary school in a rural town in Jamaica. Following the Peace Corps, she attended Teachers College at Columbia University in New York City, graduating with a master's degree in secondary science education. Career Laufer is a former school teacher, having taught at Louisa County Middle School and Tandem Friends School in Charlottesville. 2019 Virginia Senate Election
The 2019 Virginia Senate election was held on November 5, 2019, concurrently with the 2019 Virginia House of Delegates election, House election, to elect members to all 40 seats in the Senate of Virginia for the 161st Virginia General Assembly and the 162nd Virginia General Assembly. The Virginia House of Delegates is one of the two houses of the Virginia General Assembly, the other being the Senate of Virginia. It has 100 members elected for terms of two years; unlike most states, these elections take place during odd-numbered years. The House is presided over by the List of Speakers of the Virginia House of Delegates, Speaker of the House, who is elected from among the House members by the Delegates. The Speaker is usually a member of the majority party and, as Speaker, becomes the most powerful member of the House.
