The Vereinigung der Vertragsfußballspieler e. V. (VDV) is the professional footballer's union in Germany. It has approximately 1,300 members playing in the German professional leagues. Junior footballers at the beginning of their professional careers can also be members from the age of fifteen. Footballers who have been playing abroad or have retired can remain members. The union was founded on 15 June 1987 in Offenbach am Main by the former professional footballers Benno Möhlmann, Ewald Lienen and Frank Pagelsdorf, together with colleagues including Guido Buchwald, Florian Gothe, Charly Körbel and Bruno Labbadia. The goal of the union was to work in the interest of the players. Especially important at that time were work and contract conditions, the independence of players, and the democratisation of German professional football. Josip "Joe" Šimunić (; born 18 February 1978) is a retired footballer and current president of NK Rudeš. Andreas Beck (; born 13 March 1987) is a former professional footballer who played as a right-back. Born in the Soviet Union, he represented Germany at youth and senior levels. Robert Enke
Robert Enke (24 August 1977 – 10 November 2009) was a German professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He played for Mönchengladbach, Benfica, and Barcelona, but made most of his appearances for Bundesliga side Hannover 96 in his homeland. He won eight full international caps for the Germany national team between the 1999 Confederations Cup and his death in 2009, and was part of the squad which finished as runners-up in Euro 2008.
