Venezuelan Professional Baseball League
The Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (, or LVBP) is the top-level professional baseball league in Venezuela. The league's champion takes part in the Caribbean Series each year. History Background and predecessors Baseball had been played in Venezuela at the amateur level since the late 19th century, with the first national tournament played in Caracas in October 1917, between eight teams representing Caracas, La Guaira, Puerto Cabello, Macuto, Vargas, Macuto, and Maracay. Early clubs included Santa Marta (baseball club), Santa Marta (La Guaira), Patriotas de Venezuela, Venezuela and Navegantes del Magallanes, Magallanes (both of Caracas). A national baseball league () was officially formed on June 26, 1927. Leroy Robert "Satchel" Paige (July 7, 1906 – June 8, 1982) was an American professional baseball pitcher who played in Negro league baseball and Major League Baseball (MLB). His career spanned five decades and culminated with his induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, National Baseball Hall of Fame. Sam Jethroe
Samuel Jethroe (January 23, 1917 – June 16, 2001), nicknamed "the Jet", was an American center fielder in Negro league and Major League Baseball. With the Cincinnati & Cleveland Buckeyes he won a pair of batting titles, hit .340 over seven seasons from 1942 to 1948, and helped the team to two pennants and the Negro World Series title. He was named the National League's Rookie of the Year in with the Boston Braves, and led the NL in stolen bases in his first two seasons. Early life Nicknamed "the Jet" for his stunning speed, Jethroe was born in Columbus, Mississippi but grew up in East St. Louis, Illinois. Roy Campanella
Roy Campanella (November 19, 1921 – June 26, 1993), nicknamed "Campy", was an American professional baseball player, primarily as a catcher. The Philadelphia native played in the Negro leagues and Mexican League for nine years before entering the minor leagues in 1946. He made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut in 1948 for the Brooklyn Dodgers, for whom he played until 1957. His playing career ended when he was paralyzed in an automobile crash in January of 1958. He is considered one of the greatest catchers in the history of the game. After he retired as a player as a result of the accident, Campanella held positions in scouting and community relations with the Dodgers. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969. Oscar Estrada
Oscar Estrada (February 15, 1904 – January 2, 1978) was a Cuban professional baseball outfielder, pitcher and first baseman who appeared in one Major League Baseball (MLB) game for the St. Louis Browns in 1929 and in the Negro leagues. The left-hander stood 5'8" and weighed 160 lbs. Estrada played in 1924 and 1925 for the integrated Cuban Stars (East) in the Eastern Colored League but most of his baseball career was in Cuba. In 1926 and 1927, Estrada pitched for the Lynn Papooses of the New England League. He played for the Shreveport Sports in 1929. On April 21, 1929, the 25-year-old Estrada came in to pitch the top of the 9th inning in a home game against the Detroit Tigers at Sportsman's Park. Manuel García Carranza (December 28, 1905 – April 13, 1995), nicknamed "Cocaína", was a Cuban professional baseball pitcher and outfielder in the American Negro leagues in the 1920s and 1930s. A native of Manacas, Cuba, García made his Negro leagues debut in 1927 for the Cuban Stars (West). The 1941 Amateur World Series was the fourth edition of the Amateur World Series (AWS), an international men's amateur baseball tournament sanctioned by the International Baseball Federation.
