Valur Men's Football
The Valur men's football team, commonly known as Valur (, ), is the men's football department of the Knattspyrnufélagið Valur multi-sport club. The club is based in Reykjavík, Iceland, and currently plays in the Besta deild karla, the top league of men's football in Iceland. The team plays its home games at Hlíðarendi in Reykjavík. The team's colours are red and white. Valur has spent most of its time in the top-flight of Icelandic football, spending only three seasons outside the top tier. Valur is one of the most successful football clubs in Iceland, with 23 Icelandic championships. Early beginnings Football arrived in Iceland before the end of the nineteenth century, and as elsewhere, became popular amongst young people. Hlíðarendi (stadium)
Valsvöllur ( or more precisely 'Valur Stadium'), also known as Hlíðarendi (; named after the street with the same name, which means " slope's end") and formerly Vodafonevöllurinn ( or 'Vodafone Stadium'), is a multi-purpose stadium in Reykjavík, Iceland. It is the home-court of Valur's football, basketball and handball teams. The football stadium holds 2,465 people, including 1,201 in seats. The indoor court holds 1,300 people in seats. The stadium broke ground in 2004 and the indoor stadium was formally opened on 7 September 2007 while the outdoor football stadium was formally opened on 25 May 2008. It bore the name of Vodafone from 2007 until 2015. Haukur Páll Sigurðsson
Haukur Páll Sigurðsson (born 5 August 1987) is an Icelandic former footballer who played as a left back. Club career Haukur has played club football in Iceland and Norway for Þróttur, Alta and Valur. He signed with Valur in 2010. In 2020, he won the Icelandic championship for the third time. On 1 August 2023 Haukur played his 245th game for Valur, becoming the player with the most games in Icelandic top flight for the club. Portadown F
Portadown ( ) is a town in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. The town is based on the River Bann in the north of the county, about southwest of Belfast. It is in the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council area and had a population of about 32,000 at the 2021 Census. For some purposes, Portadown is treated as part of the "Craigavon Urban Area", alongside Craigavon and Lurgan. Although Portadown was founded during the early 17th century English Plantation of Ulster, it was not until the Victorian era and the arrival of the railway that it developed as a major town. 1974–75 UEFA Cup
The 1974–75 UEFA Cup was the fourth season of the UEFA Cup, the third-tier club football competition organised by UEFA. The final was played over two legs at the Rheinstadion, Düsseldorf, West Germany, and at the Diekman Stadion, Enschede, the Netherlands. It was won by Borussia Mönchengladbach of West Germany, who defeated FC Twente of the Netherlands by an aggregate result of 5–1 to claim their first UEFA Cup title. No team from West Germany had ever won the UEFA Cup, or its unofficial predecessor Inter-Cities Fairs Cup before Borussia's first conquest, which came two years after reaching the final in 1973. 1968–69 European Cup
The 1968–69 season of the European Cup football club tournament was won by AC Milan, who beat Ajax 4–1 in the final, giving Milan its first European Cup title since 1963, and its second overall. A number of Eastern Bloc clubs withdrew from the first two rounds when UEFA paired up all of the Eastern Bloc clubs against one another in the aftermath of the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. Vasas SC () is a Hungarian sports club based in Budapest. Members of the ''Hungarian Union of Iron Workers'' founded the club as ''Vas- és Fémmunkások Sport Clubja'', the "Sport Club of Iron and Metal Workers", on 16 March 1911. Away Goals Rule
The away goals rule is a method of tiebreaking in association football and other sports when teams play each other twice, once at each team's home ground. Under the away goals rule, if the total goals scored by each team are equal, the team that has scored more goals " away from home" wins the tiebreaker. This is sometimes expressed by saying that away goals "count double" in the event of a tie, though in practice the team with more away goals is simply recorded as the victor, rather than having additional or 'double' goals added to their total. The away goals rule is most often invoked in two-leg fixtures, where the initial result is determined by the aggregate score — i.e. the scores of both games are added together. Jeunesse Esch (full name ''Association Sportive la Jeunesse d'Esch/Alzette'') is a professional football club based in Esch-sur-Alzette, in south-western Luxembourg. The side play in the National Division, the highest league in the country, and have won the league title on 28 occasions between 1921 and 2010, the most of any team in Luxembourg. 1967–68 European Cup
The 1967–68 European Cup was the 13th European Cup, UEFA's premier club football tournament. The competition was won by Manchester United, who beat Benfica 4–1 in the final at Wembley Stadium, London. The European Cup title marked the tenth year since the Munich air disaster, in which eight United players were killed and their manager, Matt Busby, was left close to death, the day after earning a place in the semi-finals of the 1957–58 competition. It was also the first time an English side had won the trophy. The away goals rule (which had already been used in the Cup Winners' Cup and the Fairs' Cup) was introduced if aggregate scores were level after two legs, but only for the first round of the competition.
