The University of Otago, Wellington is one of seven component schools that make up the University of Otago Division of Health Sciences. All University of Otago medical students who gain entry after a competitive Health Sciences First Year programme, or who gain graduate entry, spend their second and third years studying in Dunedin in a programme called Early Learning in Medicine (ELM), which is jointly taught by the Otago Medical School and the School of Biomedical Sciences. In their fourth, fifth, and sixth years, medical students study at either Otago Medical School; the University of Otago, Christchurch; or the University of Otago, Wellington. Michael Baker (epidemiologist)
Michael George Baker is an epidemiologist with the University of Otago. Baker is a member of the New Zealand Food Safety Authority's Academy and of the New Zealand Ministry of Health's Pandemic Influenza Technical Advisory Group (PITAG). Early life Baker has an identical twin brother, David, who is a general practitioner in Sydney, Australia. The twins are the eldest of four children. They attended secondary school in Hamilton and medical school in Auckland. Michael Baker studied at the University of Otago, where he graduated MB ChB and earned a Diploma in Public Health, and the University of Auckland where he obtained a Diploma in Obstetrics. Dianne Sika-Paotonu
Dianne Sika–Paotonu is a New Zealand immunologist, biomedical scientist and academic in the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine and Associate Dean (Pacific) at the University of Otago Wellington. She is of Tongan descent and is the first Pasifika biomedical scientist to receive the Cranwell Medal for science communication in 2020 and the 2022 Prime Minister's Science Communicator of the Year prize. Diana Sarfati
Diana Sarfati (born 1967/1968) is New Zealand's Director–General of Health and a public health physician and health services researcher. She was formerly head of Te Aho o Te Kahu, the Cancer Control Agency in New Zealand. Career Sarfati was appointed Interim Chief Executive of the Cancer Control Agency on 1 December 2019, becoming the permanent chief on 1 July 2020 for what is now known as Te Aho o Te Kahu, Cancer Control Agency. In that role, she reported to the Minister and Associate Ministers of Health, and advises Government on cancer-related matters. Lynette Sadleir
Lynette Grant Sadleir (born 1 August 1963) is a New Zealand paediatric neurologist and epileptologist, and a former synchronised swimmer and coach. Biography Born on 1 August 1963 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Sadleir competed for New Zealand in synchronised swimming at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. With her sister Katie Sadleir, she finished 12th in the women's duet. She also competed in the women's solo, finishing in 35th place. After retiring from competition, Sadleir was the synchronised swimming coach for the New Zealand teams at three Commonwealth Games: in 1986, 1990 and 1994. Sue Pullon
Sue Pullon is a New Zealand public health researcher and practicing GP. She is the author of the ''New Zealand Pregnancy Book''. Background Pullon is a professor at the University of Otago's Wellington School of Medicine and Health Sciences. She was Head of the Department of Primary Health Care and General Practice from 2010 to 2017. In 1980, Pullon became a medical officer with the Family Planning Association, under the leadership of Dame Margaret Sparrow. Pullon worked as a GP for 32 years before moving to a full-time position with the University of Otago in 2011. She was promoted to Professor in 2017. Ian Ambury Miller Prior (16 October 1923 – 17 February 2009) was a New Zealand doctor, epidemiologist, environmental campaigner and arts patron. He is acknowledged as the founder of epidemiology in New Zealand. He conducted pioneering epidemiological studies of Māori, Cook Islanders and Tokelau Islanders in the 1960s. He was active in a number of environmental campaigns including the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, and was well known for his support of the arts, in particular the Wellington Sculpture Trust. Tom O'Donnell (physician)
Thomas Vianney O'Donnell (23 July 1926 – 25 December 2014) was a New Zealand medical practitioner and academic. Early life and family O'Donnell was born in Wellington in 1926, the only son of Scottish-born Annie (née Welsh) and Irish-born Patrick Joseph O'Donnell, a railway clerk. The O'Donnell family moved to Hunterville in 1938 when Patrick was appointed stationmaster there, and the following year Thomas was sent to board at Sacred Heart College, Auckland, situated in Ponsonby at that time. In 1943 he began medical studies at the University of Otago, graduating Bachelor of Medical Science in 1947 and MB ChB in 1950. Keri Rose Lawson-Te Aho is a New Zealand academic specialising in studying mental health issues and suicide amongst New Zealand's Māori people. Biography In 1995–96, Lawson-Te Aho was a Fulbright scholar and visiting research fellow at the East-West Center in Hawaii.
