The University of Applied Arts Vienna (german: Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien, or informally just ''Die Angewandte'') is an arts university and institution of higher education in Vienna, the capital of Austria. It has had university status since 1970. History The predecessor of the ''Angewandte'' was founded in 1863 as the ''k. k. Kunstgewerbeschule'' (Vienna School of Arts and Crafts), following the example of the South Kensington Museum in London, now the Victoria & Albert Museum, to set up a place of advanced education for designers and craftsmen with the Arts and Crafts School in Vienna. It was closely associated with the ''Österreichischen Museums für Kunst und Industrie'' (Imperial Royal Austrian Museum of Art and Industry, today known as the MAK). It was the first school of its kind on the continent. Early life and education Heidemarie Jiline Sander was born in Wesselburen, Nazi Germany on 27 November 1943. Wolf Dieter Prix is an Austrian architect. In 1968 he co-founded the architects' cooperative Coop Himmelb(l)au, which has an international reputation as an important representative of deconstructivism. Greg Lynn (born 1964) is an American architect, founder and owner of the Greg Lynn FORM office, an o. University Professor in the Institute of Architecture at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and a professor at the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture. Stefan Sagmeister (born August 6, 1962) is an Austrian graphic designer, storytelling, storyteller, and typographer based in New York City. In 1993, Sagmeister founded his company, Sagmeister Inc., to create designs for the music industry. Hugo Markl (born December 6, 1964 in Pasadena, California) is a contemporary American artist, curator, and creative director. He studied Visual communication at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (1985–90) where he graduated with an M.A. in fine arts.
