Unity Of The People
Unidad del Pueblo ( en, Unity of the People; UP) is a Canary Islands left-wing nationalist party. Objectives UP seeks independence for the Canary Islands and building a socialist society. The party defends a leading paper of the working class in the process of achieving its goals. History UP was formed by former members of other left-wing Canarian nationalist political parties. Unidad del Pueblo supported Alternativa Popular Canaria (APC) from 2002 to 2005, when political differences between the two organizations arise. UP gained a town councillor in the 1999 and 2003 local elections in Santa Lucía de Tirajana. Since 2007 UP began to present lists in all the elections held in the Canary Islands. The party achieved 1400 votes in the regional elections of that year and 1800 in the municipal ones, losing the only councilman the party had. Canarian Nationalism
Canarian nationalism is a political movement that encourages the national consciousness of the Canarian people. The term includes several ideological trends, ranging from the right to self-determination (and complete independence from Spain) to a demand for further autonomy within Spain. Self-government through history The origins of the Canarian people started with the Spanish conquest of the islands, when the local Guanche Berber population were conquered and eventually assimilated and European-style manorialism introduced in most of the islands. During the last days of the conquest, on 30 May 1481, an aboriginal leader from Gran Canaria called Tenesor Semidán (afterwards baptized as Fernando Guanarteme) signed a peace treaty with Fernando II of Aragon, in the so-called Carta de Calatayud. 2007 Canarian Parliamentary Election
The 2007 Canarian regional election was held on Sunday, 27 May 2007, to elect the 7th Parliament of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands. All 60 seats in the Parliament were up for election. The election was held simultaneously with regional elections in twelve other autonomous communities and local elections all throughout Spain. The 2015 Spanish local elections were held on Sunday, 24 May 2015, to elect all 67,515 councillors in the 8,122 municipalities of Spain and all 1,040 seats in 38 provincial deputations. 2014 European Parliament Election In Spain
The 2014 European Parliament election in Spain was held on Sunday, 25 May 2014, as part of the EU-wide election to elect the 8th European Parliament. All 54 seats allocated to Spain as per the Treaty of Lisbon were up for election. The People's Party (PP) emerged as the largest party overall, albeit with its worst nationwide election result in 25 years with a mere 26.1% of the share and 16 seats, losing 2.6 million votes and 8 seats from its 2009 result. The 2009 European Parliament election was held in the 27 member states of the European Union (EU) between 4 and 7 June 2009. 2007 Spanish Local Elections
The 2007 Spanish local elections were held on Sunday, 27 May 2007, to elect all 66,131 councillors in the 8,111 municipalities of Spain and all 1,038 seats in 38 provincial deputations. The elections were held simultaneously with regional elections in thirteen autonomous communities, as well as local elections in the three foral deputations of the Basque Country and the eleven island councils in the Balearic and Canary Islands. The results saw few changes overall; most incumbent governments retained their majority, with only a few exceptions. The PP government in the Balearics fell, and a coalition led by PSOE took power. While the elections were seen as a first indication of how the 2008 Spanish general election might turn out, the results proved to be inconclusive.
