''Une saison au Congo'' (, ''A Season in the Congo'') is a 1966 theatre play by Aimé Césaire, first performed in March 1967 in Brussels by the Théâtre Vivant. In September of the same year, the play was produced at the Venice Biennale. It follows the political career of Patrice Lumumba, first president of the Republic of the Congo in Africa, taking a deeply pessimistic view of his fate. The play depicts the last months of the life of Patrice Lumumba during the transition to independence of the Belgian Congo marked by conflicts with the secession of Katanga, supported by the Belgian and broader Western interests. After its first performance in Belgium, the play was produced at the Venice Biennale in March 1967, then at the Théâtre de l'Est parisien by theatre director Jean-Marie Serreau on 4 October 1967. Aimé Césaire
Aimé Fernand David Césaire (; ; 26 June 1913 – 17 April 2008) was a French poet, author, and politician. He was "one of the founders of the Négritude movement in Francophone literature" and coined the word in French. He founded the Parti progressiste martiniquais in 1958, and served in the French National Assembly from 1945 to 1993 and as President of the Regional Council of Martinique from 1983 to 1988. His works include the book-length poem ''Cahier d'un retour au pays natal'' (1939), '' Une Tempête'', a response to Shakespeare's play '' The Tempest'', and '' Discours sur le colonialisme'' (''Discourse on Colonialism''), an essay describing the strife between the colonizers and the colonized. The Théâtre national de la Colline is a theatre at 15, rue Malte-Brun in the 20th arrondissement of Paris. The closest métro station is Gambetta. It is one of the five national theatres dedicated to drama which are entirely supported by the French Ministry of Culture. The other four are the Odéon-Théâtre, the Comédie-Française, the Théâtre National de Chaillot, and the Théâtre National de Strasbourg. Jean-Marie Serreau (28 April 1915 – 22 May 1973) was a 20th-century French actor, theatre director and a former student of Charles Dullin.
