Union for Peace in the Central African Republic (UPC, ) is a rebel group in the Central African Republic which controls southern parts of the country. History UPC was formed on 17 September 2014 by Ali Darassa from the Séléka, ex-Séléka elements. Their initial headquarters was Bambari, however they were forced to retreat on 6 March 2017. On 10 January 2019, they launched a heavy attack on MINUSCA forces in Bambari vowing to recapture the city. They were repelled and in response Portuguese paratroopers raided their base in Bokolobo, seizing some weapons and destroying some checkpoints. On 17 December 2020, the UPC joined the Coalition of Patriots for Change. War crimes On 29 January 2019, 18 people were killed and 23 wounded when UPC fighters opened fire during a funeral ceremony in Ippy. Between 2016 and 2020 UPC killed more than 1300 people. The Central African Republic Civil War is an ongoing civil war in the Central African Republic (CAR) involving the successive governments, rebels from the former ' coalition, the Anti-balaka militias, and various foreign and international forces. In the preceding Central African Republic Bush War (2004–2007), the government of President François Bozizé fought with rebels until a peace agreement in 2007. January 2019 Bambari Clashes
In January 2019, a series of clashes occurred in the town of Bambari in the Central African Republic between Union for Peace in the Central African Republic (UPC) rebels against government and United Nations Peacekeeping forces. The clashes cumulated in Operation BEKPA 2, when United Nations forces, including Portuguese and Bangladeshi special operations forces and Nepalese Peacekeepers launched an offensive operation to secure the town. History On January 10, 2019, UPC rebels using "heavy weaponry" launched an attack on the town of Bambari in an attempt to seize resources and to extort the local population by collecting their taxes. Ndassima
Ndassima is a gold mine in Ouaka prefecture in Central African Republic. It is the nation's only industrialized gold mine. It was taken from the legal owners, Axmin Inc., during the civil war in 2013 before being seized by Wagner Group around 2017. Description Ndassima is one of the largest mines in the Central African Republic, covering an area of 138 square miles. History Prior to foreign ownership, the mine was dug by hand. Central African Republic based, Toronto-registered Axmin was given granted a license to operate the mine in 2010. UPC rebels took control of the mine during the Central African Republic Civil War in 2013. In June 2013, heavy rains provoked the collapse of the mine, killing 37 miners and injuring many others. Ippy
Ippy is a town located in the Central African Republic prefecture of Ouaka, near the geographic center of the country. It is 364 kilometers (226 miles) from the city of Bangui directly. Driving distance, however, is 496 kilometers (308 miles). Ippy has a car rental service which is popular among tourists visiting the town. History The Ippy Hospital was founded by American missionary Margaret Nicholl Laird with facilities including 60 beds, two operating theaters and a 1,000 English-language medical textbook library.
