Water Polo
Water polo is a competitive sport, competitive team sport played in water between two teams of seven players each. The game consists of four quarters in which the teams attempt to score goals by throwing the water polo ball, ball into the opposing team's goal (sport), goal. The team with more goals at the end of the game wins the match. Each team is made up of six field players and one Goalkeeper (water polo), goalkeeper. Excluding the goalkeeper, players participate in both offensive and defensive roles. It is typically played in an all-deep swimming pool, pool where players cannot touch the bottom. A game consists mainly of the players swimming to move about the pool, treading water (mainly using the eggbeater kick), passing the ball, and shooting at the goal. Water Polo At The 2024 Summer Olympics – Women's Tournament
The women's tournament of water polo at the 2024 Summer Olympics at Paris, France was held from 27 July to 10 August 2024. It was held at the Paris Aquatic Centre and Paris La Défense Arena. It is the seventh official appearance of the tournament. Spain won their first title after defeating Australia in the final. The Netherlands won against the United States for the bronze medal. Qualification Competition format The ten teams were seeded into two groups for a preliminary round. The teams in each group played a round-robin. The top four teams in each group advanced to the knockout round while the fifth placed teams was eliminated. The fifth placed teams was ranked ninth and tenth based on win–loss record, then goal average. The knockout round began with quarterfinals and the winners advanced to the semifinals, while the quarterfinal losers played in the fifth- to eighth- place classification. Margaret Dingeldein
Margaret "Margie" Dingeldein (born May 30, 1980) is an American water polo player who won a bronze medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics. Her position is attacker, and she is considered an excellent perimeter shooter. High school Dingeldein attended Merced High School and was named a water polo high school All-American and member of the U.S. Junior National Team. In 1998, she graduated valedictorian of her high school class and was named a National Merit Finalist. College As a freshman at Stanford University in 1999, Dingeldein was the Cardinals' top scorer with 45 goals. She earned first-team all-tournament at the water polo National Tournament, as well as Academic All-American. In 2000, she again led the team in scoring with 59 goals and was named First Team All-America by the American Water Polo Coaches Association. Heather Petri
Heather Danielle Petri (born June 13, 1978) is an American water polo player who won the silver medal with the US women's national team at the 2000 Summer Olympics, a bronze medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics, a silver medal in Beijing in 2008 and a gold medal in London 2012. She is one of four female players who competed in water polo at four Olympics and one of two female athletes who won four Olympic medals in water polo. Her position is attacker. Petri began playing water polo on the boys' team in high school, but helped start a girls' water polo program at Miramonte High School and was team captain for two years. In 1997 she was recruited by UC Berkeley coach Maureen O'Toole, and played collegiate water polo from 1997–2001. Petri earned All-America and All- MPSF honors at Cal in 1998 and 1999, and finished her college career with 96 goals. Rachel Fattal
Rachel Fattal ( ; born December 10, 1993) is an American water polo player. Fattal attended Los Alamitos High School and graduated in 2012. She then attended UCLA, where she majored in history and played water polo; she graduated in 2017. She was part of the American team winning the gold medal at the 2015 World Aquatics Championships, where she played in the driver position. She was also part of the gold medal-winning American team at the 2016 Summer Olympics. She was the top sprinter at the 2016 Olympics, with 17 sprints won. Ashleigh Elizabeth Johnson (born September 12, 1994) is an American water polo player of Ethnikos Piraeus team, who is considered by many to be the best goalkeeper in the world. She was part of the American national team that won the gold medal at the 2015 World Aquatics Championships. In 2016, she became the first African-American woman to make the US Olympic team in water polo. Tumuaialii "Tumua" Anae (born October 16, 1988) is an American water polo goalkeeper. She was an NCAA champion and All-American while playing for the University of Southern California. She also won a gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics with the United States national team. Career High school Anae played on the water polo team at Corona del Mar High School. She was named the CIF Division II Co-Player of the Year in her senior year. College Anae started her college career at the University of Southern California in 2007. That season, she had 89 saves and allowed 67 goals. The following year, Anae had 232 saves and allowed 120 goals. Her 4.6 goals against per game was the best in the MPSF. Elizabeth Anne "Betsey" Armstrong (born January 31, 1983) is an American water polo goalkeeper, who won gold medals with the United States women's national water polo team at the 2012 Summer Olympics, 2007 and 2011 Pan American Games, and 2007 and 2009 world championships. She is a leading goalkeeper in Olympic water polo history, with 102 saves. Armstrong attended Huron High School in Ann Arbor and was a three-year letterwinner on her water polo team. She then went on to graduate from the University of Michigan in 2005, where she was the goalkeeper for the women's water polo team. Jacqueline "Jackie" Frank DeLuca Cochran (born May 1, 1980) is an American water polo goalkeeper, 2004 bronze medal Olympian and two-time collegiate National Player of the Year. Early life Jackie Frank began competitive swimming at the Long Beach Swim Club at age 10. After a year of swimming, she joined the water polo team. In the last game of the year, she played in goal when the regular goalie did not show up and ended up making first-team all-tournament. Frank is 1998 graduate of Los Alamitos High School, where she competed on both the swim and water polo teams and was named First-Team All-America in water polo each of her four years.
