United States Men's National Lacrosse Team
The United States men's national lacrosse team has won eleven of fourteen World Lacrosse Championships, the most recent in 2023. Team USA finished second in the other three field lacrosse tournaments, losing to Canada in 1978, 2006, and 2014. The team is organized by US Lacrosse, the national governing body. The roster usually consists of lacrosse players who play in the Premier Lacrosse League. Lacrosse At The 1904 Summer Olympics
The sport of field lacrosse was played at the 1904 Summer Olympics, which marked the first time that lacrosse had been featured at the Olympic Games. Three teams participated — two from Canada and one from the United States. One of the Canadian teams consisted entirely of Mohawk nation players. The victorious Shamrock Lacrosse Team is more commonly known as the Winnipeg Shamrocks. A second American team, the Brooklyn Crescents, was entered but did not participate: they were scheduled to play a semi-final against the Shamrocks, but arrived too late and were disqualified. The 2028 Summer Olympics, officially the Games of the XXXIV Olympiad and commonly known as Los Angeles 2028 or LA 28, is an upcoming international multi-sport event scheduled to take place July 14–30, 2028, in the United States. Los Angeles will be the host city, with various events also scheduled to be held at other cities spread across the Greater Los Angeles area, plus two subsites in Oklahoma City. Los Angeles had originally bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics. Following multiple withdrawals, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved a process to concurrently award the 2024 and 2028 Games to Los Angeles and Paris as the two remaining candidates; Paris was preferred as host for 2024, while Los Angeles agreed to host in 2028. Lacrosse was a demonstration sport at the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Teams from Canada and the United States played three games, with the team from the United States winning the series 2 games to 1. Games were played in the new Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in front of large crowds. Canada was represented by an all-star team, while the United States was represented by the Johns Hopkins lacrosse team, coached by Ray Van Orman. Pages 763-766 in the original file reader. The first game on Sunday, August 7 was played on the same day as the marathon, which finished in the Coliseum. The United States won 5-3 in front of 75,000 people. A field lacrosse game was played between Canada and Great Britain at the 1908 Summer Olympics. The game was tied 9-9 in the fourth period, before Canada scored 5 straight goals to pull ahead. Canada won 14-10 to earn their second of two gold medals, the only lacrosse gold medals given out in the Olympic Games. Background The game marked the second appearance of lacrosse at the Olympics, the first being at the 1904 Summer Olympics. Only two teams competed — one fewer than in 1904. South Africa was slated to send a team but then withdrew prior to the tournament. Both teams held try-outs to select the players to represent their country. Premier Lacrosse League
The Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) is a professional field lacrosse league in the United States. The league comprises eight teams. Its inaugural season debuted on June 1, 2019, and included a 14-week tour-based schedule taking place in 12 major-market cities. The league was founded by the American professional lacrosse player Paul Rabil and his brother Mike Rabil. Investors include the Chernin Group, the Raine Group and Joseph Tsai. History In September 2018, Bloomberg reported that Paul Rabil would be launching a new professional lacrosse league. The PLL would be a direct competitor to the more established Major League Lacrosse. The new league would provide professional lacrosse players with salaries, health care, and league equity. The Canadian men's national lacrosse team represents Canada in men's international lacrosse competitions. The team is governed by the Canadian Lacrosse Association, which is a member of World Lacrosse, the international governing body for lacrosse. Field lacrosse is a full contact sport, full contact outdoor sport played with two opposing teams of 10 players each. The sport originated among indigenous peoples of the Americas, Native Americans, and the modern rules of field lacrosse were initially codified by Canadian William George Beers in 1867. Field lacrosse is one of three major versions of lacrosse played internationally. The rules of men's lacrosse differ significantly from Women's lacrosse, women's field lacrosse (established in the 1890s). The two are often considered to be different sports with a common root. The World Lacrosse Men's Championship is the international men's field lacrosse championship organized by World Lacrosse that occurs every four years. The WLC began before any international lacrosse organization had been formed. It started as a four-team invitational tournament which coincided with Lacrosse in Canada, Canada's centennial lacrosse celebration in 1967. 2014 World Lacrosse Championship
The 2014 World Lacrosse Championship was held July 10–19 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park outside Denver, Colorado. 38 nations played 142 games in this international men's lacrosse championship tournament organized by the Federation of International Lacrosse. Nine nations—Belgium, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Israel, Russia, Thailand, Turkey, and Uganda—all competed in the event for the first time. In the championship game on July 19, Canada captured its third gold medal by upsetting the United States 8–5 in front of 11,861 fans. Canadian goalie Dillon Ward was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after he made 10 saves in the championship game, becoming the first goalie to ever receive the honor.
