United States Women's National Water Polo Team
The United States women's national water polo team represents the United States in international women's water polo competitions and friendly matches. It is one of the List of water polo world medalists#Women's water polo world medalists, leading teams in the world since the late 1990s. Women's water polo has been on the international stage since 1978 and was an exhibition sport at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics coached by Sandy Nitta before being introduced as a full medal sport in 2000. On March 27, 2009, USA Water Polo named Adam Krikorian the head coach of the United States women's national team. USA Water Polo is the governing body for the sport of water polo in the United States and is a member of the United States Aquatic Sports. USA Water Polo is responsible for fielding U.S. national teams and hosts 20 annual tournaments. The Organization is headquartered in Irvine, California. History USA Water Polo was formed in 1978 after a new law designated the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee, United States Olympic Committee as the governing body for all Olympic activity in the United States. Water polo in the United States had previously been controlled by the Amateur Athletic Union. The organization is now responsible for overall Olympic development. The U.S. has fielded a women's national team since the 1970s. The 1979 FINA Women's Water Polo World Cup was the first edition of the event, organised by the world's governing body in aquatics, the International Swimming Federation World Aquatics, formerly known as FINA (; ), is the international federation recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for administering international competitions in water sports. 2014 FINA Women's Water Polo World League
The 2014 FINA Women's Water Polo World League is played between November 2013 and June 2014 and open to all women's water polo national teams. After participating in a preliminary round, eight teams qualify to play in a final tournament, called the Super Final in Kunshan, China from 10–15 June 2014. In the World League, there are specific rules that do not allow matches to end in a draw. If teams are level at the end of the 4th quarter of any world league match, the match will be decided by a penalty shootout. Teams earn points in the standings in group matches as follows: * Match won in normal time - 3 points * Match won in shootout - 2 points * Match lost in shootout - 1 point * Match lost in normal time - 0 points Preliminary round Europe The European preliminary round consisted of two group of three teams.
