USS Interpreter (AGR-14)
USS ''Interpreter'' (AGR-14) was a , converted from a Liberty Ship, acquired by the US Navy in 1957. She was reconfigured as a radar picket ship and assigned to radar picket duty in the North Pacific Ocean as part of the Distant Early Warning Line. Construction ''Interpreter'' (AGR-14) was laid down on 5 January 1945, under a Maritime Commission (MARCOM) contract, MC hull 2341, as the Liberty Ship ''Dudley H. Thomas'', by J.A. Jones Construction, Panama City, Florida. Dudley ( , ) is a market town in the West Midlands, England, southeast of Wolverhampton and northwest of Birmingham. Shakedown cruise is a nautical term in which the performance of a ship is tested. Generally, shakedown cruises are performed before a ship enters service or after major changes such as a crew change, repair, refit or overhaul. The shakedown cruise simulates working conditions for the vessel, for various reasons. A radar picket is a radar-equipped station, ship, submarine, aircraft, or vehicle used to increase the radar detection range around a nation or military (including naval) force to protect it from surprise attack, typically air attack, or from criminal activities such as smuggling. The term ' picket' is an old military term for a sentry placed forward of a defensive line, in order to provide an advanced warning. By definition a radar picket must be some distance removed from the anticipated targets to be capable of providing ''early warning''.
