UEC European Track Championships – Women's Scratch Race
The women's scratch race at the UEC European Track Championships was first competed in 2014 in Guadeloupe, France. The scratch race consists of a single race over a certain length. The winner is the first to cross the line, taking into cyclists who have lapped the peloton. One of the less controllable events on the track, the first eleven editions of the event up to 2024 produced eleven different gold medalists. No one has won the race twice as of 2024. 2021 UEC European Track Championships was the twelfth edition of the elite UEC European Track Championships in track cycling and took place at the Tissot Velodrome in Grenchen, Switzerland, from 5 to 9 October 2021. Maria Martins (born 1 April 1974) is a French middle distance runner who specializes in the 1500 and 3000 metres. She was born in Santa Katarina, Cape Verde. Arriving in Roubaix in 1988 to rejoin her father, Maria is 1.62m tall and weighs 50 kg. A teacher of hers detected her aptitude for Track and Field and directed her towards athletics. She first ran for club Lille UC up to 1993, then at the (ACVA) before stopping training at the end of 1995 to have a baby. She restarted training in 1999 encouraged by her coach at Club Villeneuve and then she ran for club US Tourcoing (which became club in 2006). Shannon McCurley (born 26 April 1992) is an Australian-born Irish female track cyclist, who became the first Irish female to qualify for an Olympic track cycling event. Background McCurley was born in Melbourne. Her father was from Belfast, and her mother from Dublin, so she had the potential to participate in sport for three countries, United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland and Australia. She first visited Ireland in 2012. Career McCurley began her sports career with running but switched to cycling after some injuries and a brief try at triathlon. Emily Nelson (born 10 November 1996) is a former English professional racing cyclist. Her sister, Josie, is also a cyclist and joined Trinity Racing for the 2021 season. Career On 8 August 2013, at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow, Nelson competed at the UCI Juniors Track World Championships. She was part of Britain's Team Pursuit squad which also included Hayley Jones, Amy Hill and Emily Kay.
