U.S. Route 87
U.S. Highway 87 (US 87) is a north–south United States highway (though it is signed east–west in New Mexico) that runs for from northern Montana to southern Texas, making it the longest north–south road to not have a "1" in its number and the third longest north–south road in the country, behind U.S. 41 and U.S. 1. Most of the portion from Billings, Montana to Raton, New Mexico is co-signed along Interstates 90 and 25. It is also co-signed along the majority of I-27 in Texas and future plans call for the interstate to be extended along the US 87 corridor. As of 2004, the highway's northern terminus is in Havre, Montana, at US 2 and its southern terminus is in Port Lavaca, Texas, at SH 238. Port Lavaca, Texas
Port Lavaca ( ) is a city in Calhoun County, Texas, Calhoun County, located in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 12,248 at the 2010 census and 11,557 at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. It is the county seat of Calhoun County and part of the Port Lavaca, Texas micropolitan statistical area. Port Lavaca is southwest of Houston. History Port Lavaca was originally known as Lavaca. The town would quickly grow as a result of the Great Raid of 1840, Linnville Raid of 1840. This raid saw the town of Linnville, Calhoun County, Texas, Linville decimated by the Comanche tribe, and caused former residents of the town to settle in what is now Port Lavaca. Clayton, New Mexico
Clayton is a town in and the county seat of Union County, New Mexico, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 2,980. History Early history Native Americans were present in the area of Clayton for at least 10,000 years, as evidenced by the findings at the Folsom site about 55 miles northwest of Clayton, near the village of Folsom. The first Spanish explorers in the 16th century found the region inhabited by the Apache people. In the 18th and early to mid-19th century, the Comanche controlled this region. Santa Fe Trail
The Santa Fe Trail was a 19th-century route through central North America that connected Franklin, Missouri, with Santa Fe, New Mexico. Pioneered in 1821 by William Becknell, who departed from the Boonslick region along the Missouri River, the trail served as a vital commercial highway until 1880, when the railroad arrived in Santa Fe. Santa Fe was near the end of El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro which carried trade from Mexico City. The trail was later incorporated into parts of the National Old Trails Road and U.S. Route 66. The route skirted the northern edge and crossed the north-western corner of Comancheria, the territory of the Comanche. Realizing the value, they demanded compensation for granting passage to the trail. American traders envisioned them as another market. The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT; ) is a state government organization which oversees transportation in State of New Mexico in the southwestern United States. The agency has four main focuses—transit, rail, aviation and highways. The department is based in the Joe M. Anaya Building in Santa Fe. Texline, Texas
Texline is a town in northwestern Dallam County, Texas, United States. Its population was 448 at the 2020 census. The town is named for its location near the New Mexico-Texas state line. The town sits on U.S. Highway 87, which continues southeast towards Dalhart and northwest towards Clayton, New Mexico. History of boundary dispute For years, a simmering dispute has existed over whether Texline is lawfully a part of Texas or New Mexico. The straight north-south border between the two states was originally defined as the 103rd meridian, but the 1859 survey that was supposed to mark that boundary mistakenly set the border between too far west of that line. This survey error resulted in the current towns of Texline, Farwell, Bledsoe, Bronco, and a part of Glenrio being within the State of Texas. Dalhart is a city in Dallam and Hartley counties in the U.S. state of Texas, and the county seat of Dallam County. The population was 8,447 at the 2020 census. History Founded in 1901, Dalhart is named for its location on the border of Dallam and Hartley Counties; its name is a portmanteau of the names of the two counties. The city was founded at the site of a railroad junction, which heavily contributed to its early growth. Texas State Highway 238
State Highway 238 (SH 238) is a state highway running from Port Lavaca south to Seadrift. The route was designated on December 22, 1936, from Port Lavaca to Inez. On September 26, 1939, it was extended to Seadrift, replacing a portion of SH 27. On May 29, 1941, the section north of Port Lavaca was cancelled. Interstate 25 (I-25), also known as the Pan-American Freeway, is a major Interstate Highway in the western United States. It is primarily a north–south highway, serving as the main route through New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming.
