U.S. Route 80
U.S. Route 80 or U.S. Highway 80 (US 80) is a major east–west United States Numbered Highway in the Southern United States, much of which was once part of the early auto trail known as the Dixie Overland Highway. As the "0" in the route number indicates, it was originally a cross-country route, from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. Its original western terminus was at Historic US 101 in San Diego, California. However, the entire segment west of Dallas, Texas, has been decommissioned in favor of various Interstate Highways and state highways starting in 1967, being truncated to its current west end in 1991. Currently, the highway's western terminus is at an interchange with Interstate 30 (I-30) on the Dallas– Mesquite city line. Its eastern terminus is in Tybee Island, Georgia, near the Atlantic Ocean. Interstate 20 (I‑20) is a major east–west Interstate Highway in the Southern United States. I-20 runs beginning at an interchange with I-10 in Reeves County, Texas, and ending at an interchange with I-95 in Florence, South Carolina. Cuba, Alabama
Cuba is a town in Sumter County, Alabama, United States. At the 2020 census the population was 306, down from 346 in 2010. History The Cuba post office existed prior to 1850, with nothing in the present-day area of the town of Cuba but wilderness. The first people to live in this site were a slaveowner named Mr. R.A. Clay, who moved from Autauga County with his family and approximately 100 slaves in 1852, and purchased all the land which later made up the town of Cuba. By 1861, the town was a thriving farming industry and had a sizable truck-crop enterprise. Also during this time, the Northeast and Southwest Railroad (later the Alabama Great Southern Railroad, Southern Railway and now Norfolk Southern) was being built. A decommissioned highway is a highway that has been removed from service by being shut down, or has had its authorization as a national, provincial or state highway removed, the latter also referred to as downloading. Dixie Overland Highway
The Dixie Overland Highway was an auto trail across the southern United States. It was conceived in July 1914 by the Automobile Club of Savannah, which envisioned a practical all-year driving route from Georgia to California. Auto Trail
The system of auto trails was an informal network of marked routes that existed in the United States and Canada in the early part of the 20th century. Marked with colored bands on utility poles, the trails were intended to help travellers in the early days of the automobile. Auto trails were usually marked and sometimes maintained by organizations of private individuals. Some, such as the Lincoln Highway, maintained by the Lincoln Highway Association, were well-known and well-organized, while others were the work of fly-by-night promoters, to the point that anyone with enough paint and the will to do so could set up a trail. Trails were not usually linked to road improvements, although counties and states often prioritized road improvements because they were on trails.
