Thomas Hartwell Brown Jr. (July 2, 1890 – August 3, 1972) was a college football and basketball player for the Vanderbilt Commodores of Vanderbilt University. He played next to his brother Charles on the line for the football team. Tom Brown was also a medical doctor. Early years Tom Brown was born on July 2, 1890, in Gallatin, Tennessee, to Thomas Hartwell Brown, Sr. and Annie Donelson Hunt. Vanderbilt Brown graduated from Vanderbilt University with an M. D in 1913. In his senior year he was awarded the title of 'Bachelor of Ugliness,' given to the most liked fellow on campus. Tom Brown was a prominent tackle on Dan McGugin's Vanderbilt Commodores football teams, selected All-Southern. As a freshman, he took part in the scoreless tie of defending national champion Yale. Tom Brown is a fictional character created by author Thomas Hughes in his work ''Tom Brown's School Days'' (1857) which is set at a real English public school—Rugby School for Boys—in the 1830s when Hughes himself had been a pupil there. Tom Brown is based on the author's brother, George Hughes, and George Arthur is based on Arthur Penrhyn Stanley. Thomas John Brown (born 16 August 1943) is a retired Anglican bishop in New Zealand. He is the former Bishop of Wellington. On 29 July 2011, Brown announced, with the support of the Primate, that he would retire in March 2012, effectively completing his duties at the end of February 2012. He retired as Bishop of Wellington during an evening service on 26 February 2012, which had the Anglican Primate of Australia, who is also the Archbishop of Brisbane, in attendance along with Archbishop David Moxon, the Primate of New Zealand. Brown was educated at the University of Otago in New Zealand and ordained in 1972. After curacies at St Matthew's in Christchurch, New Zealand, and St James the Greater, Leicester, England, he returned to New Zealand to become the vicar of Upper Clutha in 1976. Thomas Graham Brown (10 April 1933 in Glasgow – 13 December 2019) was a Scottish engineer who was most notable for collaborating in the design of the first medical ultrasound machine along with the obstetrician and designer Ian Donald, a physician at the University of Glasgow and industrial designer and obstetrician John MacVicar. Life In 1944, Brown enrolled at Allan Glen's School in Glasgow. In April 1951, after completing school and making an exploratory visit to the company to meet the chief engineer, he joined Kelvin & Hughes Ltd at the time a Glasgow manufacturer of scientific instruments as a technical apprentice. Tom Brown (1900–1974) was a British anarcho-syndicalist trade unionist, anti-fascist, engineer and writer. Brown contributed articles to papers including '' War Commentary'', ''Freedom'', and ''Direct Action'' alongside authoring numerous pamphlets. Brown was known for his compelling public speaking and ability to communicate effectively in everyday terms. He placed a strong emphasis on federated local groups rather than centralism, and on workplace-based revolutionary trade unionism. Thomas Archibald Brown (February 7, 1889 – January 5, 1959 Ely, Minnesota), known as "Big Tom", was the mobbed-up police chief of St. Paul, Minnesota during the Great Depression. A native of West Virginia, Brown arrived in the Twin Cities in 1910 and joined the St. Paul Police Department in 1914. At the time, the Department already had an unenviable reputation. Around 1900, Police Chief John O'Connor had developed the so-called "O'Connor system" in which fugitives from other jurisdictions were immune to arrest and extradition so long as they kept a low profile and committed no violent crimes while hiding in St. Paul. Upon becoming Police Chief in June 1930, however, Big Tom Brown refused to obey or enforce the O'Connor System's traditional ban on unnecessary violence. Thomas James Brown (12 August 1886 – 10 November 1970) was a British coal miner and Labour Party politician. During a 22-year career in Parliament he became known as the "miner's champion", fighting for compensation for those suffering from industrial diseases, and to improve state pensions. Miner Brown was born in Leigh, in the centre of the Lancashire coalfield. He went to the Brunswick School and Leigh Technical School, but as with most of the local men, he began work in the coal mines at the age of 12 in 1898. He joined the Lancashire Miners' Federation and the Labour Representation Committee in 1903. Political career In 1919 Brown was elected to Hindley Urban District Council, of which he was twice Chairman before standing down in 1945. He also became a Justice of the Peace for Lancashire in 1922; he held this appointment for forty years before going off the active list.
