The Girl Guides Association Of Grenada
The Girl Guides Association of Grenada (GGAG) is the national guiding organization of Grenada. It serves 2288 members as of 2012. Founded in November 1925, at the Anglican High School (formerly Church of England High School), the girls-only organization became an associate member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) in 1990. It became a full member in 2011 at the 34th World Conference - Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom, 11–15 July 2011. History The first Girl Guide company in Grenada was set up at the Anglican High School (formerly Church of England High School) in November 1925. Other Guide companies were soon formed. Brownie packs were introduced in 1927 and the first Ranger Guide company in 1928. World Association Of Girl Guides And Girl Scouts
The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS ) is a global association supporting the female-oriented and female-only Guiding and Scouting organizations in 152 countries. It was established in 1928 in Parád, Hungary, and has its headquarters in London, United Kingdom. It is the counterpart of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM). WAGGGS is organized into five regions and operates five international Guiding centers. It holds full member status in the European Youth Forum (YFJ), which operates within the Council of Europe and European Union areas and works closely with these bodies. Girl Guides (known as Girl Scouts in the United States and some other countries) is a worldwide movement, originally and largely still designed for girls and women only. The movement began in 1909 when girls requested to join the then-grassroots Boy Scout Movement. The movement developed in diverse ways in a variety of places around the world. In some places, girls joined or attempted to join preexisting Scouting organizations. In other places, all girl groups were started independently; some would later open up to boys, while others merged with boys' organizations. In other cases, mixed-gender groups were formed, some of which sometimes later disbanded. Anglican High School, formerly known as the Church of England High School is a secondary girls' school located in St. George's, Grenada. It is one of eighteen secondary schools located on the Caribbean island of Grenada and was founded in 1916. History The Church of England High School was founded in 1916 by Archdeacon Walton as a private Anglican school located at Bachelor Hall on Simmons Alley and had three staff members and nineteen students. In the early days of the school, students paid for their schooling, entering at the grammar school level and continuing through secondary education. The school relocated to the Lamollie House on Church street, where currently the CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank is located and moved again to a building on the site of the Grenada Boys' Secondary School between 1946 and 1952. 34th World Conference (WAGGGS)
The World Conference is the governing body of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts and meets every three years. If a country has more than one association, the associations form a federation for coordination and world representation. As the Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting movement spread, independent national Guiding associations were set up; however, a need for international cooperation was felt. Lady Baden-Powell founded an informal International Council in London in February 1918. In 1920, two leaders from each known Guide country were invited to the British County Commissioners Conference held at Saint Hugh's College, Oxford.
