The Devil's Whore
''The Devil's Whore'' (released as ''The Devil's Mistress'' in North America) is a four-part television series set during the English Civil War, produced by Company Pictures for Channel 4 in 2008. It is about the adventures of the fictional Angelica Fanshawe and the historical Leveller soldier Edward Sexby and spans the years 1636 to 1660. It was written by Peter Flannery, who began working on the script in 1997. It is believed to have had a budget of £7 million. It was followed by a sequel series, '' New Worlds'', in 2014. Production The series was filmed in South Africa. This caused some negative comment from reviewers but the producers maintained that they had been unable to find suitably "old English" locations in England. Peter Flannery
Peter Flannery (born 12 October 1951) is an English playwright and screenwriter. He was born in Jarrow, County Durham and educated at the University of Manchester. He is best known for his work while a resident playwright at the Royal Shakespeare Company in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Notable plays during his tenure include: ''Savage Amusement'' (1978), ''Awful Knawful'' (1978), and ''Our Friends in the North'' (1982). Other theatre work has included ''Singer'' (1989). He is perhaps best known to a wider audience for his highly-acclaimed television adaptation of ''Our Friends in the North'', produced by the BBC and screened on BBC Two, BBC2 in 1996. ''New Worlds'' is a 2014 Channel 4 TV series, set in 1680s England and America and forming a sequel to ''The Devil's Whore''. Production In August 2013 Channel 4 announced a follow up series to ''The Devil's Whore''. Written by Peter Flannery and Martine Brant, it follows Angelica (the central character from the previous series), now Countess of Abingdon, trying to protect her daughter, in an England still full of unrest and Hope and Ned, struggling in colonial Massachusetts. Elizabeth Lilburne ( fl. 1641–1660), born Elizabeth Dewell, was a Leveller and the wife of John Lilburne. Biography The daughter of the London merchant Henry Dewell (d. in or after 1655), no details of Elizabeth's life prior to her marriage to John in or before September 1641 (shortly after his release from prison) are known.
