Donald Trump, President of the United States from January 2017 to January 2021, has controversially refused to release his tax returns since his 2015–2016 presidential campaign at the 2016 election. Though Trump promised to release the returns during his campaign, he repeatedly refused to release his tax return information throughout his presidency. Trump sued to prevent release of his tax returns from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or his accountants, which were sought by certain state officials and Congressional committees after Democrats won a majority in the House of Representatives in the 2018 mid-term elections.
